Thumbs down Thinking of moving to North Dakota...have a few ?'s

Hello All

My Wife and I plan to move to North Dakota after I finish my Military service specifically here Peck Two Story Home For Sale

can anybody tell me about this area? Any information would be great. I know it is somewhat close to Bismark. Are there jobs available to people without a degree? Both me and my Wife plan to get a degree but obviously need income while we do it. Does North Dakota have any state insurance? How is the healthcare? I have read that people that move to North Dakota from other states are sometimes not welcomed, is this true? I am from Wisconsin but the area I am from is not a very good place to live anymore, we are a young couple with twin baby girls and want to live in a nice place in peace. Also if there are any veterans reading this that can tell me how close a VA Hospital, or VA office is that would be very helpful as I have some injuries that will need continued care after I get out. Are there any colleges around the area of the house I am looking at? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing for my family and not moving somewhere we won't be able to make it at. Any information about this area would be greatly appreacitated. Thank You! Looking forward to living in your great state!!

Hi

Here is some info from the National Veterans web page. I knew the VA hospital for North Dakota was in Fargo...but there is a clinic in Bismarck.

North Dakota | National Veterans Foundation

As far as colleges...nearest ones would be in Bismarck. Might want to check into Bismarck State College to see what they have. That would be your best option I would think....but folks who live near Bismarck can chime in here.

As for the area of Steele....I am not familiar with that town...but it is close to Bismarck so for employment your best bet would be there. But I am sure there would be something in the town but just not familiar enough to point you in any direction. Bismarck as grown a lot in the past 5 years and along with many areas of the state have an employment shortage and would eagerly snap someone up. May not be a high paying job...as a lot of jobs in the state are lower paying than elsewhere but I would believe you could find something without too much trouble even without a degree. Not sure if it would be in Steele though. I hope others can help you out.

People from outside of the state are welcomed....no problems there at least from my perspective. As always in a small town especially the better you fit in the better you are accepted. But for the most part people in small towns are very happy to have new residents. Along as you are hard working...family man...and get along with others you will be fine.

I did not understand what you meant about state insurance...and healthcare is good but dont know anything about the VA as I am not a veteran.

Hope this helps some...

Dan

Thanks for all the info...as far as state insurance I was meaning like a state run free/discounted plan for low income families, just until I get on my feet and stuff. Thanks again.

we are relocating to ND-Fargo area in about 2 or 3 months. I have done alot of research on the web and have found 2 great web sites for statistics, , Schooldigger.com gives great information about schools divided even into city and town-they even do preschools! I think I have found out the most info from this forum-just reading other posts let you know the "feel" of the area and what is pertinent to the people who live there, and then you have the great replies from the very nice people who live in the area. The north dakota job service also lists jobs all over the state, some require previous military service. You can also check the VA job web site, not only do they list VA med centers, but also have employment listings and online apps, they give preference to vets for jobs. - Good luck to you!
