I am not doubting you...just kind of curious why people there would act like that??? I know many people up in Williston who are experiencing large influxes of new oil related jobs...and they are used to all the strangers and new faces...but maybe because so many of them are new themselves???

I got the impression that a lot of people around there were just overwhelmed by all the newcomers. The Wal-Mart parking lot was absolutely packed with out-of-state vehicles. I think all the oilfield workers with their beat-up, mud covered trucks who've just moved there have left them a little unsettled. I guess that is understandable.

I think I am going to write a letter to Senator Dorgan complaining about the incidents with the state highway patrolman. The guy didn't look a day over 20 and I think he must have been a rookie.
I still think SW North Dakota is a real nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Yeah, but in all honesty...many North Dakotans drive around in mud covered, beat up pickups also. And I'm sure the majority of oil field workers are from ND themselves...so there is no excuse for newcomers or out of staters to be treated that way.

Dickinson is a pretty small community, but has many of the basics. I think your best bet would be to contact the local Community Center.

Good luck on your move!

there is a running club in Fargo and in Grand Forks.....red river runners...
I suggest contacting this place to find out about the western part of the state and what is out there in regards to running.

Dickinson ND, small very small...
You can stand on main street throw a coke can in any direction and it will land just outside of the town.
I was in Dickinson as a volunteer for Americorps. I am not of good health and it's like, who knew? So, much to my disappointment I didn't get to stay. However, since my return and seeing my family doctor and he explained stuff I went oh gees, 'if I only had a brain'.
Any way Dickinson is a great place. The person who mentioned the police. I don't know. I hardly saw any within the three months I was there and began to wonder if they had any.
For a great visual though here is a web cam that the radio station I loved to listen to has posted with the lens facing the one major intersection. KDIX - 1230 AM - Dickinson's Very Own Count them one.
The people of North Dakota seemed friendly to me. However any more I hardly ever pay attention to the mannerisms of folks, cause its a crap shoot on what cha gonna get, I don't care where you are.
Oh but clean bathrooms! (up north) Some one mentioned that on another thread and I never really understood why that would be an impact observation, until I experienced it myself. My first thought is the caring of appearances and how much it matters.
Sometime though around midnight some one in a Chevy Truck with duel headers is going to rack it up running West Villard and Main. The speed limit is 35. Every night of the week when I was trying to sleep I would hear him. I didn't need to see him. I had an interest when I was much younger and there are just some sounds one always knows. Police officers, they must have been---busy. Because he never missed a beat.
Typical warm small town, suspicious? Shoot no more than any one being suspicious of a new neighbor moving in up the street from home, until they get to know them. But I don't think the college kids liked the foreign exchange students. I got that from listening to the news on

DogFamily,
By now you've probably already either moved to Dickinson or not, but if you have any more questions, let me know. I grew up in Dickinson, and now live in Mankato, MN. I attended college in Bozeman, MT for 5 years, so I can give you a good comparison between the two.
Where in Montana are you moving from? If it's the eastern part of the state, you'll find the weather in Dickinson to be very similiar as well as the people, except that the people are even friendlier (hard to imagine as Montanans are pretty friendly to begin with).
Good luck with your move and let me know if you have any other questions.

Rachel,
There is a new community Center in Dickinson that is REALLY nice to have in the North Dakota winters as it has an indoor running track that you can use to keep in shape as well as several running treadmills.
I'm not sure of an actual running club in Dickinson, but I grew up there and ran distance in high school, running about 10 miles/day. One thing you will NOT find lacking is the number of roads that you can run on! I do know that there are a lot of runners in Dickinson, but again don't know if there's an actual running club. There is a local sports store (Big Sky Athlete) that sells the shoes I'd get when running there...you could probably Google them and someone there would be more knowledgeable about any clubs than I. They don't have a web site that I could find, but their phone # is (701) 483-8160.
Hope that helps!

I very much doubt that anyone is judging anyone by their muddy pick up trucks... if anyone is weary to newcomers there its because people who live in Dickinson are very trusting and don't usually screw each other over and a lot of us have had bad experiences with people from other towns taking advantage of that.
