Default Shopping and other activities in North Dakota

I love to shop and I was wondering where in North Dakota has a good mall or shopping center? Also what other fun things are there to do in North Dakota? I love to roller blade, read, shop, travel, listen to music, go to the movies, eat out, etc. What about jobs? I want to get a job in Human Resource Management. DO these jobs pay well in ND? What jobs pay well in ND? What city in ND would be a good place for a single 20 year old female with a BS in Business Administration with a minor in Psychology. Also I am a strong Christian and would like a good church home.

The best shopping in ND is in Fargo, followed by Bismarck. Most jobs that you check out in ND won't pay as well as in other states. If you adjust for the reduced cost of living in ND, it works out to be pretty similar. My cousin got a job in HR for a local company (in Fargo) last year and seems to like it pretty well. As far as the things that you enjoy, Fargo has quite a few parks and such, and keeps on getting more and more restaurants. Church-wise, you will find a preponderance of Lutheran churches, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Evangelical Free, Assemblies of God, and many others.

Thanks for the info! Also I am a African American female. Will this be a problem in ND? Are people friendly towards blacks? Is there alot of racism or discrimination? Are there many blacks in ND? I particularly interested in Fargo, ND.

There's not a lot of overt racism that I've ever seen or identified, but like anywhere else I'm sure there's some under the surface. Even if a person is racist, you'd probably never know. Since I'm a white guy, I guess I can't speak too much to racism, aside from the fact that I'm not racist, and the people that I associate with aren't--same applies to discrimination. There aren't many black people in Fargo in comparison to the rest of the country; but a lot more than in the rest of ND. I'd say that most are college kids, professionals, or refugees.

I would agree with Travis Fargo and then Grand Forks would be the more diverse communities as they both have universities. Grand Forks also has an airforce base (althought it is in the middle of downsizing and restructuring) the base brought in many different cultures that would otherwise never be in GF. But of all the cities I would say Fargo just being the largest city would have the best opportunities for you. West Acres mall is Fargo is the regional mall and would have everything you would want. If not....the outlet shops at Albertville MN are 3 hours southeast on I-94.

Dan

SO Far so good, Fargo, North Dakota seems like a real winner! I've never even considered moving to ND until I found this forum. If I do decide to move to ND I would need to find a good job in Human Resource Management, a nice house/apartment thats in a nice area near the mall or other attractions. Also are there any summer internships available in ND for college students? If so I would love to get one during the summer so I can know what ND is like! If anyone has more info on Fargo, ND feel free to contact me.

I would agree on all of the above except they left out Minot. Minot is not as big, 35,000, but we are expanding at a quick pace. With the military increasing personnel and the oil moving in at record levels, we are become quite diverse in population. As for shopping, true we don't have a quantity of stores, but what you can find there, we would have something similar to it here.

Minot's Dakota Square Mall is actually a nice mall. Many people from Bismarck travel north to Minot to shop at their mall ... which probably indicates it is equal to or better than Kirkwood mall in Bismarck.

-I would go for Minot or Dickinson. Both are small cities, Minot is at 37,000 I believe and Dickinson is at 17,000. As far as local scenery and rural surroundings go, no other ND cities can compete.

-A good church home? EVERY town in North Dakota is suitable for that, even the ghost towns have at least two churches.

-If you like shopping, Minot has the edge, Dickinson is a bit more "main street".

-Fun? Of course. Especially if you like the outdoors. Both Minot and Dickinson are near Roosevelt national park, the Maah Daah Hey trail (some of the best mtn. biking on earth), and the ND badlands.

-Racially ND is a very white state. BUT folks are generally very accepting of anyone of a different ethnic background. And like Fargo and Grand Forks, both cities have small universities, which help with ethnic diversity.

-Fargo and Grand Forks are both great, but my heart has always been in western ND. No matter where you end up, I wish you an easy transition and a bright future there.
