Looking for Work in North Dakota
Hello, I'm looking for a little advice on my job search. Currently I'm a self-employed residential construction worker in Wisconsin. Its been pretty tough to stay busy here in recent years.....especially during the winter months. I've heard from friends about the work shortages in North Dakota, so I'm getting pretty serious about making a move out there. I doubt I'd be able to get my construction business going out there right away but I would be willing to work for other construction crews or work in mining, oilfields or whatever for the time being. I just need to get some cash flow coming in!
Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here has any idea of which line of work would be the best pay- construction or oilfield work? What type of pay are each one? I want to weigh my options there.
Do some companies pay better, have better work conditions, provide housing, etc. than others? If so, which ones?
If I need to find my own housing, where do I look? I don't need much. I'm a single guy so all I'd really need is a small apartment or even if someone would be willing to rent a room, at least on a temporary basis.
Everything I've read up on so far points me in the direction of Tioga and Williston, so I guess those are the areas of the state I'm looking at right now.
I know there's a lot of questions here but I'd sure appreciate any help that any of you can offer. Thanks.

Bazooka4...I read in the Williston Herald that Wausua Homes (I believe they are in Wisconsin as well as Michigan) is going to be building new homes up in Williston. The construction company building the homes is also building an extended stay hotel in downtown Williston. A Minnesota company out of St. Cloud is also building an extended stay hotel (CandleWood Inn) and a full service Holiday Inn near the airport. The following link is the article on the downtown extended stay hotel.
Williston Herald - Online Edition
There is a lot of new residential construction going on as well. And new oilfield shops and offices west of Williston popping up everywhere. If you can handle the ND winters, it is a job seekers heaven. Housing could be an issue, but it is getting better.

Thank you! And yes, Wausau homes is in Wisconsin. We've even got a city named Wausau over here.
Anyways, that's good to know that they're in the area. That may be a very viable option for me. As far as the ND winters go....I'll have to learn to adjust. Bottom line is that I need to find work! I appreciate all your help here.
If anyone has any other advice/options I'd love to hear from you. Thanks again Roloff.

My husband has been working in residential construction for about 8 years doing everything from the ground up.Faming, drywall, finish work, installation etc and we too, are thinking of making the move to ND. We're in WNC and there aren't even any jobs at McD's here, so we need to make a move soon. But I haven't really been able to find any specific companies to apply to.We've been checking the jobs sites, and newspapers, etc but didn't know if there were specific contractors we should be calling. Several times we've been told well apply when you get here, which I understand, but we can't make that move without a solid job lined up.So we really need some help here. Thanks!!

I would recommend looking into Industrial Builders (Based out of Fargo, ND) and Northern Improvement (based out of Bismarck, ND). Operating Engineers ( a Union) out of Mandan, ND would be another good bet. My dad and brother have been with these companies since long before I was even born...they are hard-working, honorable men who would not stick with a poor company. They are all very flexible and offer great pay, benefits and opportunities. There are also a few powerplants around central ND that have positions that are similar to that type of labor.
