I didn't even look at your name. If the poster is a male you should watch out for the girls in town that lie about their age. Don't drink and drive it will damper your career and for whatever reason the people in town do not have pleasant feelings towards as you will hear "basers" or "wingnuts" If you are of the age of 21 don't worry about the lack of bars you can find one on every street. (pretty much) Whoever said if you didn't drink before couldn't have said it better. Be carefull and drive slow in the winter. Honestly. Everytime it snows you can find about 10 cars in the ditch from base to town. No joke. If you look for things to do you will find them. It's about making the most of it. Bismarck isn't too far away and during the summer we have several lakes to go to that provide entertainment. It depends on who your friends are. I know too many people having lived here my whole life and I've had a lot of air force friends I still remain close to that have left. I've met a lot of guys that despise it here and some that miss it. It is cold. I've been here all my life and I'm not used to it. It's cheap and affordable and the crime is low. Other than that if you are thinking about using some of that assistance from the military I'd suggest Minot State. My ex finished his degree up here while enlisted in the service. I highly recommend MSU. It's CHEAP and the college is pretty easy and laid back. That is the only reason I am still here. It's very affordable. I'm paying for it out of pocket affordable.

BLESSED NORTH DAKOTA
On the sixth day God turned to the Archangel Gabriel and said: 'Today, I am
going to create a land called North Dakota. It will be a land of outstanding
Natural beauty; a land of beautiful lakes, each one full of fish. It
Shall have tall majestic pines, peacefully flowing rivers, landscapes full of
Buffalo, tall grass, and eagles, beautiful blue skies, forests full of bear, elk
And moose, rich farmland and fair skinned people.' God continued, 'I
Shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper and
They shall be known as a most friendly people, people who practice being
Nice every day.'
But Lord,' asked Gabriel, 'don't you think you are being too
Generous to these North Dakota people?'
'Not really,' replied God 'just wait and see the winters I am going
to give them.'
AND NOW YOU KNOW
The truth about ND winters is that they are somewhat unpredictable. Some years harsher than others.
But, what I personally like about the area is there is always a change of seasons. Fall is beautiful with the various shades of color, spring brings a rebirth of Mother Nature. Not boring like it is here on the coast of California where we only have green season vs brown season. The important thing is to be prepared for winter driving conditions (i.e. winter survival kit in car if your going into the boondocks, warm winter clothing(dress in layers), shovel in trunk to dig out, windshield scraper, etc...)
Im' no young whipper-snapper anymore, but I've talked to a lot of people over the years about living in the mid-west winters and the ones that complain the least are the ones that just embrace it as another season. Dress warm, spend some time outside during the short days of winter, will help you from getting the "cabin fever" syndrome.
Good luck in NoDak!

You will need some crucial items
1. An engine block heater for your car, installed about 250.00
2. Snow boots, insulated coveralls, warm hats, warm gloves, a very heavy jacket
3. Alot of patience, the winters are long and quite trying.
4. A car remote starter is nice to have in the winter... ahh, but when spring hits, it's like heaven! Minot is actually quite a nice town. Restaurants, shopping, a small zoo, the state fair is there in July. If you want to hit a more metro area, Winnipeg is about 6 hours more or less away, Minneapolis is about 9 or so. Bismarck and Fargo are larger cities in the state. The summers are wonderful here.
I know what it's like to move from a warm climate to ND, I lived in the south, and was transplanted here, that first winter is interesting, but you'll get used to the winters. You will never again think that 60 degrees is cold after living here a winter, trust me LOL....oh, and some people who have lived here all their lives, they may kiddingly tease ya about moving up here and the winters, they are just kidding with ya, take it with a grain of salt, it will all be o.k.!

Ummm do your research. The film is simply titled "Fargo" because the beginning of the film takes place there. The rest of the film acknowledges that it takes place in Minnesota. And the attitudes/accents are stereotypical, but it remains true for a large part of the reigon.

Public Library Welcome to the Minot Public Library
You'll like the area, especially if you hunt and fish. Minot has a lot of activities, you just have to ask and look for them. We don't have the large quantities of theaters, malls, etc. but what we do have works for our community. This year we are having an exceptionally snowy weather with record amounts of snow, which is great for snowmobilers and skiiers. Having live in Florida and now here, there will definitely be a culture and weather shock. Especially during the summer when we have over 16 hours of day light. Any way, welcome to Minot and Minot AFB. ct

I'd argue Minot has some of the best shopping in North Dakota because of the base.
You need to realize your life is going to change significantly though. North Dakota is a good place with humble people. I believe its mostly because of the winter.
I'd also argue you'll find yourself in some maligned way enjoying the harshness of the winter. It reverts you to some primal survivalist urges and when spring comes, even if you did nothing but sit inside you'll feel a sense of accomplishment.
