Default Ghost Towns & Devils Lake Area, ND

Hello All, I'm planning a vacation this coming summer and would like to know if anybody has any input on the Devils Lake Area?

Also would like to check out some of the ghost towns in the north too might be fun!

http://www.ghostsofnorthdakota.com/

I will be driving and will have plenty of time to do discovering out there.

Thanks Very Much All, Barry

Barry--I took a road trip to the Dakotas a few years ago to visit Lewis & Clark sites. I also visited some of the ghost towns I found listed on ghosttowns.usa. It was great fun. Not only are there ghost towns, but there are many small towns in ND that will probably be ghosts within the next 5-10 years.

I didn't go through the Devil's Lake area, I was mostly in the central and western parts of the state. It was cool to stand in a completely deserted place and try to imagine what it was like based on the notes others had posted about their recollections of the towns. For many of the sites, there is nothing left, but they still have a dot on the road map.

Have you seen the National Geographic article hat was published about ND's de-population last year?

Devils Lake has really good fishing, largely due to the growth of the lake over the past 15 or so years. There are a number of places that you can stay by the lake, none of which I can really comment on since I haven't stayed at them.

As far as ghost towns, Fillmore is a little more than 50 miles straight west of Devils Lake via Highway 19. South of Fillmore, in Wells County is Manfred, ND (which is also about 50-60 miles from Devils Lake). I don't know much about the areas east of Devils Lake. I grew up between Maddock and Esmond, so Fillmore and Manfred fall somewhat within my old stomping grounds range.

Last summer when my husband and I were driving to the lower 48 from Alaska we stayed at a hotel in Devil's Lake. We also drove to the casino they have there (rather small one). All I can say is the lake was very choppy since it was raining very hard and had a mystical look and feel to it.

If you like to fish, Devils Lake is a good fishing lake.
