As of yesterday there were about 1500 Guardsmen/women form MN, ND, SD, and maybe other places. There are 300 more (from where, I don't know) scheduled to arrive today to help patrol the dikes.

My father's side of the family is from North Dakota and I still have a number of relatives there. What has always impressed me about North Dakotans is their willingness to help one another and to pitch in and do whatever they can to help their community. This seems to hold true both in good situations, as well as during the bad ones like the current flood situation. There is something there that a lot of the rest of this country could learn from, because a lot of the US has lost that community ethic.
So, while the current situation is certainly difficult for many North Dakotans, it is heartening to see the community effort is being made to meet the challenge. Despite whatever material losses may happen, you North Dakotans can be proud of your community spirit and individual sacrifices for the common good. After seeing that, I'm sure that there will a number of people who will want to relocate to your communities--your people make your state great. Be proud--and good luck in meeting the challenges in the days ahead. Many of us all over the US are praying for a good outcome.

SOLID post by Jazzlover. Some of the friendliest and down to earth people I have met are from the Dakotas. I live in an area of beautiful mountains and mesas, but one saying out- trumps all the scenery around. And that is in the end it's the PEOPLE that make the community!
They call it heartland hospitality for a reason.

DMF/Dakota Medical Foundation has a way to make your donations go further....
DMF Red River Valley Flood Fund will match the first $25,000 donated.
Go to www.impactgiveback.org & search for DMF.
The money will go to the local Salvation Army, Red Cross, and First Link.

I thought when there was a flood the manual stated that you looted local stores and got TV's, computers, radios, etc. What happened what is going on. Why are people working together

Funny isn't. When the federal government didn't show up in New Orleans within 10 minutes of Katrina, the ensuing chaos was entirely W's fault. In fact, he was likely responsible for the hurricane.
Now in North Dakota, the state, and especially the citizens, got together to help themselves. Incredibly, there's no chaos and the federal government is nowhere in sight. Nobody seems to be blaming Obama for causing the flood, or for not sending in federal troops.
