Thanks for the response! It sounds like the high temp episodes are rather short, and I could handle that without too much complaint. I plan on visiting the area over the summer (along with UP Michigan). From what I've read about both cities, I'm pretty excited about checking them out. A couple people have told me to visit in the winter, but I'm not so concerned. I'm sort of weird I guess--I'm always happier on the really cold winter days when it's snowing like crazy (or just after a snowstorm). I think I have the opposite of seasonal affective disorder.
I am with you....I grew up in Kentucky and I swear I have the opposite seasonal affective disorder too. I hated growing up down south and the 4 months of heat and humidity I just stayed inside. Anything much above 75F is about at the tipping point of too hot. I like 50s and 60s in the summer and -10s and -20s in the winter... I do like those very cold days with clear sky when you see ice crystals in the sky....the sundogs...very pleasant to me. In regards to XC skiing....in most years Minot would have a much more reliable snowpack versrus Bismarck.

I have lived literally all over the world and live in Taiwan now.....at least for the next 636 days. I bought a place near Minot in 2004 and can't wait to retire there. Minot is a smaller town with a small town feel but has all of the amenities of a large town. It's easy to get out of town away from people. Our place is close to Sawyer and as "outsiders" we have been welcomed. I wouldn't think of living any place else. I was born and raised in the Bitterroot Valley in Western Montana. But you can't eat the scenery.
