It gets alot warmer in ND than Duluth, especially Bismarck. It can easily be 90 (high temp) for entire weeks in Bismarck. So I'd recomend an AC - Don't know anyone in Bismarck who doesn't have one. The good thing is electricity is pretty cheap in ND.

Public transportation in north dakota
Hi---I am not a resident of North Dakota (yet), but have been investigating as many angles of life there as I can. I have found that there is not too much in the way of public transportation, outside of Grand Forks City (I'm not sure about Bismarck intracity transport), but I have noticed that the seven county area comprised of Ward (think Minot), McHenry, Pierce, Burke, Bottineau, Renville, Mountrail, have what looks to be really excellent rural public transport. Go to www.sourisbasintransit.com and you will have maps of everywhere the bus goes and when, and helpful info about it including fares, of course. It looks like they make special accomodation for handicapped. Best of luck. I hope you have a wonderful new life there.

Jamestown is nice. I lived there for a year and a half and loved it. Layoff forced a move but North Dakotans are the best people I've ever met. Great cooks, too. There is a small condo development near the James River but I don't know any of its features. There's always something wrong with weather no matter where you go but the people in NoDak are what makes it special.

Bismarck-Mandan has a bus system but I don't know how good it is: http://bismantransit.com/_wsn/page2.html (broken link) .
I think Fargo also has mass-transit but I'm not sure about anywhere else (other than Grand Forks)

In next year or two their will be a major development being built. Dirtwork is being built now. It is called Edgewood Village. It will have all types of housing ranging from apartments, townhomes, condos and single family homes. Only 50 years and older. The condo units will have an option of assisted living, they will have a mini mall inside of it. You can check out edgewood-village.com. It will be quite the development. They are finishing up on the Fargo one. They have a couple townhouse model homes in Minot and the dirtwork is just starting in Bismarck.

From reading other posts on this site I see it is possible to adjust from the heat of the south to the cold of the north and I love the sounds of the people in North Dakota. Is it possible for a low visioned person to survive up there in a city? I live on my social securty income and would not need to get to a job or get kids off to school so I'm thinking on the worst days I can simply stay home. I'd feel better in a condo setting instead of a single family home with a yard to maintain and snow to shovel. What city should I be considering if I am in need of an affordable small in-town condo and public transit? Thank you in advance for any time you are willing to take to help me out!!

I live here in Minot, ND and we have a certain amount of visual impaired people living here. There is public transportation and also, for the retired you can call Community Actions that have a bus that pick up senior citizens and drop them off and pick them up from appointments. As for housing, we do have lower valued condos available and apartments for rent. We have one center called the Parker Center that is a 10 story condominium complex that has a senior citizen center on the main floor that houses a cafe, pool tables, and activities. But, you have to get on a waiting list. Of course, there are always apartments to rent. If you want more details about the housing, Chamber, tourism, etc. please e-mail at my home address thorne@srt.com Either way, I think you would like it here. But it does get cold. And I do mean around the zero mark. If that's too cold, you may want to consider maybe SD. CT

I live in Fargo, and have lived in Minot when I attended college. I would highly recommend Bismarck as a place to settle. It is undergoing a boom of sorts, and has the various features you would probably like that are common to Fargo and Minot as well as the other bigger cities.
The nice thing about Bismarck is you don't have to worry about flooding. They do a good job of damming up down here when the time comes, but having that piece of mind really is great.
The cold really isn't as bad as it can be made out to be. I grew up in North Carolina, lived there 14 years so I know what the shock can be like, but honestly, I found Connecticut to feel actually colder in similar temperatures since it was more humid. The snow here is very dry, like powder at times.
When it is hot in the summer, it is usually not very humid which is great. Hot muggy days are rare.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
