Moving to Minot in September
Hi everyone! My name is Rachel and in a few short months, my family will be moving to Minot. My husband is in the AF and received orders to Minot AFB. I am trying to do my research before just jumping in and moving. We have to be there in September, and like someone said in a previous post, the base is bringing in 1,000 people for a new unit. What is the area like? Where is affordable housing? And the jobs-how is it trying to even find a job there? It's scary to be moving to another state. My husband has never had to move before and this is our first big move together. I have lived in California my whole life! Snow? What's snow? lol So tell me some of the perks of the area! Any other towns I should look into for moving to?

The perks to living in North Dakota are no crime and great public schools. That is all.

Hello Rachel,
First for jobs, visit Job Service North Dakota . There are still quite a few jobs available here in Minot. Minot is packed with activities such as free concerts in the summer at the parks, the largest zoo in the state, the State Fair, and the Scandinavian festival. ND has some of the best schools in the nation along with the lowest unemployment, and the highest GDP in the nation for 2008. Except for this last winter, snow usually isn't much of a problem for most people. Just make sure your car is tuned correctly and winterize for our temps and you should have no problem. Best of Luck.

I was stationed in Minot in the mid 1970's and at Fortuna ND a few years before that, and still have fond memories of my time there. I spent a 28 year career in the USAF and can honestly say that North Dakota and Hawaii were my two favorite assignments. Why? Certainly not the weather - they are polar opposites in that area. It was the people - both states have the warmest, most congenial people I met in my career. If you make an effort to know them, they'll welcome you, not only into their homes, but into their lives and hearts.
One word - don't let the severity of a North Dakota winter keep you in. Put on some boots and a heavy jacket and go into town on the coldest days. Avoid the chain restaurants, but do go to Speedways out on Hwy 52, that's where you'll find North Dakotans enjoying North Dakota.
My wife, a southern gal, and I went to Minot on a vacation a few years ago and enjoyed ourselves. She was seeing Minot for the first time and I went nuts looking for my old haunts.

Minot afb is great ,my husband was stationed there from 1982 until 1996 we raised our 5 children there and they all agree that was the best place to raise kids. No crime, Friendly people, Lots to do, a mall and the town people really enjoy having the base people there. We moved down town after a couple of years on base. the schools are wonderful and the younger one were well ahead in school when we returned to ILL. have fun and good luck.
