Originally by MSUgrad No first grader should ever have to go home and ask if their family hopped a fence to get here. North Dakota as a whole is not friendly to ethnic or religious differences.
|
Whaaaaaat? There is no place in the world that is tolerant of ethnic or religious differences!! Anybody who looks like a "beaner" or a "fruit picker" will be called a beaner or fruit picker no matter what state they live in. If you don't believe it beaner then I suggest you try living in a big city getto And listen to all the names those racist Getto children call you! A college educated person like you should know better!! Nevermind those names people called you in ND!!

North Dakota actually has some Islam history. Around a hundred years ago a group of Muslim families immigrated to western North Dakota from Lebanon or Syria. My wife's family was among this group. In 1929, in Ross, North Dakota, they built what is said to have been the first mosque in the United States. Ross is about 130 miles west of Harvey. This mosque was torn down in the 1970s by the descendants of the people who built it, but just a couple years ago, my wife's family helped build a new mosque in Ross to replace the original. There are few Muslims left in the area, though. Many of the descendants moved and/or are no longer Muslim. (My wife's family now is mostly non-religious or Christian.) The new mosque is more of a memorial than a place of worship, though it can be used as such. Here's a link to a story about it:

Dee62, the fact that you just referred to me by a slang term like that speaks volumes. You just helped me make my case and point right there.

MSUgrad, you are generalizing an entire state when you only lived in Bismarck? I think your anger is very obvious. I am sorry you went through what you did while living in Bismarck, but I have to disagree with you on almost everything you are saying. Just what activities for Junior high school kids-high school kids do you suggest? What activities do they have in Michigan that they do not have in ND? I'm just curious. I hope you don't say "clubbing" and "rock concerts" ... if you are an active teenager, you could find plently to do in any ND town as far as sports, movies, hanging with friends, arts activities, youth clubs, music. It is what you make of it, and doubt it is much better for you in Michigan. You are VERY angry, and to be honest, it is very hard to believe the negatives you are spewing. You only lived in Bismarck, but say the ENTIRE state is terrible. Are you Muslim?, if not, how can you dictate that any Muslim childs lives will be made a living hell? You vent and spew anger, but don't really back anything up? Just curious what facts you have, other than you were teased and picked on while growing up? There are over 10,000 school kids in Bismarck, and wonder why you were singled out?

I grew up outside of Maddock North Dakota, on a farm about 30 minutes away from Harvey. I don't know what the Muslim population in Harvey is like at this point, but I do know that there is (or was?) that halal beef packing plant started up there a couple of years back.
In general, the class sizes in small towns are small enough so that you don't have enough students to even make a proper clique.

I am from Harvey originally. The plant is still up and running. I don't believe there are many muslims living there. Just the few that work at the plant overseeing things. Interesting how things are done. The cattle are raised on a very special diet, I believe the grain they eat has never been treated with herbicides or pesticides. The cattle are slain facing east while a priest says a prayer while slitting its throat with a ceromonic blade.

Hey, if I'm going to get my throat slit, I'd rather it be done ceremoniously rather than unceremoniously.

Fargo from IL
Do you have a family? Are you coming from a large city? What info are you looking for? I moved from CA to Fargo a few years ago and I'm still alive and kicking so don't worry.
