I would wait till you get to North Dakota to have your block heater installed. Not that they are not professionals out in New York, but North Dakota mechanics do thousands, and I don't think they will charge you $210. just for labor. I had mine installed for around $110. and that included the block heater.

Default no block heater

I moved to Grafton over a year ago. I have spent two winters here. I have a 2006 toyota avalon. I went to Lithia Toyota in Grand Forks and they did not recommend it. If I still wanted it they would charge around 150.00. I do garage my car though.

Since this part wasn't answered in a ton of detail, I'll give more info. No it's not below 0 F all winter - not really even close. It can go for a few days at a time without going above 0, but that's fairly rare.

The average high for every month is above zero; the average low is below zero in only one month (January). Not totally sure how much significance the mean temperature has, but the mean temp is below freezing November through March, and from April through October actually is 40+.

But in general, as to when it gets really cold, I'd say sometime mid-to-late November is when you really start to notice the cold, but only December, January, and February I'd call "really cold." There can be cold snaps in October, November, March, and April too though
