Default We are moving to Oakes ND!!

We will finally be moving to Oakes in December. The plan is to leave on the 27th and make it to Oakes before our first day of work on the 4th of January. I hope we dont have to use the whole week to get there, but I know traveling at this time of year can be tricky.
My husband and I both fell in love with the area and I think our son will love it as well.
Thanks to those who have contacted me via this forum to help us with our decision!!

Congratulations with your move! We'll be moving out to South Dakota soon, too. Is Oaks anywhere in the southern part of ND? We'll be moving to Lemmon, which is partly in SD and partly in ND.

Oakes is in the south/eastern corner of the state. We are about 60 miles of Aberdeen. What brings you guys to SD/ND? Where will you be moving from?? When are you moving?

Welcome to the neighborhood!

What will you be doing in Oakes?

We're in Valley City....30 miles or so to the north of Oakes.

Thanks so much for the welcome. My husband and I are both nurse practitioner who will be working at the hospital in Oakes. We have a 9 year old son and two dogs that will be making the move with us. The school looks really nice!! We were hoping to rent a house for a year but no one wants to rent to people with pets. Even very well behaved girl dogs. I don't blame them though. We will be renting a 2 bedroom apt until we can find out where we want to buy. Do we live in town or just out of town??? I looking forward to spending the winter in town. The pictures I've seen of valley city look really nice !! I am sure we will visit!!! Thanks again for the welcome!! We are ready to move !! (but not packing!!!! )

Go ahead and pac. You can't go wrong. Rent for a bit and then find exactly something to your liking. haha

I know what you mean about pets and kids. Which one to get rid of for the land lord. haha Damnit man, the kid may have to go. Just kiddin. People up in North Dakota understand that. They may advertise no pets. But once you meet with them, they'll understand. Gotta get there first though.

Welcome to North Dakota for better or worse.

LOL, yea, there are some days the dogs are much better behaved than the child!!! We are fortunate that we do at least have a place to stay which has been a problem in some of the other towns!! Hopefully by 6 months we will be in a house, but the apt is ok. At least we get to keep the dogs and the kid!!

My Dr, actually he's a PA, lived in a beautiful old house in Oakes & works here in VC.

I'd maybe wait a while b-4 buying if you can. Jamestown is building a huge new hospital next year & all the little hospitals in the towns around are worried about being able to stay open.

The new facility in Jamestown looks like it is going to be really nice! According to the website it is changing its desigation to a critical access facility. Based on the requirement for that the smaller hospitals shouldnt be threatened. It is great to have so much under one roof. Oakes is also a critical access hospital.
Is it difficult to get back and forth between valley city and oakes during the winter?
Thats on thing I am looking forward to experiencing....a real winter. Yes, I can hear ya'll laughing at me now. I know I will get sick of it at some point, but I am ready to give it a try!!!

Sometimes, but it is a state highway so it gets plowed frequently. If that road is bad, any road will be nasty.
