Tiny towns with crappy schools, no jobs and nothing to keep the kids from moving away. I read in the Fargo Forum last year that ND had somehting like a 5% annual population loss and quoted some official who sounded puzzled why anyone would leave the state. People, there are plenty of good safe places to raise your kids. You don't have to do it in ND.

I spent the majority of my life in ND, I have also lived in Minnesota(for a while as a kid and again as an adult) Georgia, Texas, Germany. I have visited about 40 states and about 5 other countries. I have always missed living in ND. There are lots of nice places to visit but I would much rather live in ND. I was here for the winter of 79-80 I remember it as some of the best snowmobiling of my life! (winters of the mid 90's give it a run for the $$ though) Floods?? if you live in Grand forks yes you will get flooded about every 20 years. I guess I should put up with getting hit by a hurricane, earthquake, landslide, brushfire (pick your natural disaster) every other year by the "smart" people who live on the coasts. The bad schools? ND usually is at or near the top in quality of education, and considering what we pay our teachers I would dare say that dollar for dollar we have the best schools in the US bar none! As far as population loss I don't have a problem with that, if all the negative people like you move out, the better it will be here. When I was in the Army people would ask me where I was from and when I told them they would say stuff like "oh yeah, I was there and saw those big faces of Lincoln, Kennedy and Elvis in those rocks" (Those other states educational systems sure do have us beat!) I would say "no thats SOUTH Dakota" they would argue and I would finally say fine, its in ND then, and they would say what the %&#$ is there to do in ND. I would say "nothing, please don't go there." I would rather have a state with 100,000 of the best people on earth than a stated 5,000,000 filled with a bunch of criminals and jerks!

I'm with you there, Bismanpokerclub...
I was born and raised in Southern California, but also lived in Oregon, Washington, North Carolina, and currently Oklahoma. I'm moving to a small town about 35 miles outside of Bismarck in late spring. While Oregon, Washington state, and even North Carolina were absolutely beautiful, I didn't care for the eastern part of Southern California AT ALL - The amount of crime, racism, poor education, mean spirited people (jerks), Registered Sex offenders, and just plain ugly (at least to me) Brown and Gray landscape, was unremitting, and I wouldn't go back to SoCal on a bet. Oklahoma also is a bad fit for me, and I can't wait to get up to North Dakota.
I love the cold, hate the heat (especially when it's combined with humidity), love the countryside, am not a big-city girl, and want something better for my child and myself. So... North Dakota it is.

StartingOverAgain:
I was born, raised and lived in Connecticut for 19 years.. I've lived or worked in Mississippi, Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, North Dakota, South Carolina and New Hampshire so I've had a taste of alotta different culture and climate.
Aside from my home state being my 1st favorite place (because of family and friends)... I liked North Dakota the best!
I lived in Williston and as I used to say, "In Williston it could be 100 degrees outside but with the lack of humidity, it felt like 85. Where I'm from in Connecticut, it would be 100 but feel like 115".
I've come to the conclusion, I hate heat and humidity.. and I can deal with cold weather and snow alot better then I can deal with heat and humidity.
Plus, people in North Dakota are extremely nice and the area is simply beautiful, plus it's not terribly expensive to live out there like it is in some of the bigger East Coast towns.

I grew up in Bismarck, ND and I love the ND area, not a fisher or hunter myself but I like to indulge in the weather, being by the scenery is awesome as well! The people respect you if you respect them, and the friends you make seem to stick so well, not but 4 days ago I was in the Fargo area stuck in a parking lot with a dead battery and I flagged someone down and they were eager to help me get my car started! Thats one thing I love about this state, someones always willing to lend a hand when needed, and for some reason I would personally feel a bit more nervous asking a stranger in another state. Being in the college life right now makes me wonder about other places to live, I have already pretty much been to the entire west side of the US, Canada, and Mexico. Overall though I feel most comfortable living around here! I think I might have to be a North Dakotan For Life!!

Rudest people
I too moved here from Minnesota four years ago and to this day, I still hate it here. I have travelled the world and the people here are the rudest people I have ever met. I don't understand where they get the "I am better than everybody" attitude. I would never recommend moving here. Can't wait to put the house on the market this spring

Yeah mscalico, I have the same experience everytime I go to Bloomington. They all have the same attitude that you do. I can see why you miss MN so much.

All those rude people he was talking about were actually tourists from Minnesota.

Wow all i can say is people are ridiculous, just stating this and not saying its a fact, but the few people i have met where iam located which happens to be in Wahpeton right now right next to Minnesota- all the people that are from eastern direction are competitive as all heck i cant get 2 minutes to relax, honestly they don't come close to what a good friend is maybe i made a poor decision in the people i have met but is it honestly that big of a coincidence that the people from MN treat me like crap unlike the people from smaller towns in ND which i can actually trust and get along with better... now to clear things up this is not a stab in any sense what so ever towards MN or anyone eastern of ND we aren't better by any means were all equal but IN MY OPINION the people from ND have more respect for people!! So why my question now is mscalico you represent MN cause your from there, you came on here and posted we have the meanest people and it wasn't by any means polite yes this is a discussion board but just curios is it your personality that comes across wrong or ours? Honestly with all respect possibly left for you, you came across on a ND board and said you hated it here, anyone with respect would have been more polite and said they didnt enjoy the experience.... My opinion sorry for ranting

I've heard that there's something about -20 degrees that tends to keep the riff-raff away.
