Default Hiking

Hi y'all- I've spent a few summers out in the Rockies(Wyoming, Montana)doing what I love most, hiking. On the way out to Montana I passed Bismarck on I-94 and was awed by the sight of that city sitting out there on the Great Plains! I'm thinking of maybe making a trip to Bismarck to stay a while(or longer!) and I was wondering how the hiking/exploring is in the area. Looking on a map it appears that Theodore Roosevelt N.P. is about a two hour drive.

Bismarck is a nice city to walk through. As far as hiking goes, if you're looking for established trails, Theo Roosevelt Natl park is full of them. There's a lot of interesting country south of Bismarck/Mandan, if you're interested in sort of going off on your own. Of course, watch for posted land if you do that.

There is good hiking in both the north and south units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is about 150 miles west of Bismarck. There is also good hiking near Amidon & New England, ND. It is WSW of Bismarck about 2 hours. That area is fairly rugged and is home to White Butte, the high point of ND at about 3600 feet. There is also decent hiking in and around the Turtle Mountains in north central ND; as well as in the Sheyenne Grasslands(also known as the Sandhills) in SE ND. Happy hiking.
