Diners/dives from the past
What is your favorite diner/or dive restaurant in ND ? Or maybe one that no longer exists ? I recall King's Food Host on Main Ave. in Fargo with the cheese frenchees that would clog most arteries, but so good. You would place your order via phone from your booth. This was in the '60s. Great memories
Anyone remember King Leo's ? I grew up in North Fargo and we had the notorious Crown Drive In on 19th and University.

There's was a King's in Bismarck - great place! Also Krohls/Krolls (?) kitchen in Bismarck, we use to get nefla soup. Not sure if those places are still there. What about the Italian Village and Elbow room? We use to go to Italian Village for spaghetti/pizza and dad would head next door to the Elbow Room for a beer.
The only place I knew in Fargo is the Grainery, it was in the mall. We would stop there on our way to Detroit Lakes and would always get the beer cheese soup.

Actually Kroll's restraunt is in several cities now. Minot, bismarck, fargo. There was a king's food host in Minot also. As far as frenchee's, I love the frenchee's they have at Woodhouse restraunt. Italian village isnt around. Elbow room moved a few years ago.

The Woodhouse restaurant - I vaguely remember that and I know I've been there but trying to place it. Where is it located?
Also in Bismarck, is the Jack N Jill grocery store and donut shop right next door still there? They were on Broadway, across from the Elk's pool and Custer park. Across the street was the tiny Dairy Queen that the high school students would work at in the summer.

The wood house is on State street. It is a couple blocks north on state from divide ave. East side of road. No jack and jill or bakery anymore. Feist electronics is in the bakery. The dairy queen is still there and still very busy on summer nights.

I haven't made this recipe, but boy, get the treadmill ready !
King's Cheese Frenchee's
6 slices American cheese
6 slices white bread
mayonnaise
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
cornflake crumbs, crushed fine
oil (for deep frying)
1. Prepare 3 sandwiches, using mayonnaise and 2 slices of cheese for each. Cut the crusts off the sandwiches. Cut each sandwich diagonally both ways, making 4 triangles.
2. Combine egg, milk, flour and salt.
3. Dip each triangle into egg mixture and then coat with the corn flake crumbs.
4. Deep fry at 375 degrees until golden brown.
