Hi all, any one care to comment on New Rockford? I was looking for a smaller town and stumbled upon this one. I kind of like the location as it is almost equal distance from the four major cities. Is there any big gotchas about this place? Someone on another threat mentioned that the locals might be hostile. Does anyone else feel the same way? Any locals here want to defend their town honor? I'm looking for a quiet place to semi-retire, so the lack of jobs really isn't that big of deal.
I've spend a bit of time in New Rockford over the years, and have never gotten any sort of negative impression of the locals. It's a bit bigger town than most of those in the general vicinity (minus Carrington, to the south), so to some degree I think there has been a little higher number of people moving in and out of town over the years.
I was born there and lived there for quite a while. It's a friendly town, just be friendly to people and they will reciprocate.
Any flooding problems in town? The James river is awfully close to town. That was one of my main concerns with this area. The good news seems to be that Amtrak was considering the line that runs through New Rockford to avoid the water problems around Devils Lake, so I assume that is a good sign.

The James may flood around the flood plain adjacent to the river, but usually no widespread problems....

I am a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks and we do forecast and warn for Eddy County. Bismarck has Wells county and Foster county nearby. But in terms of river flooding from the James there in New Rockford....previous poster was correct no problems in the town from it.
