Apartments in Grand Forks?
Hi I'm planning on moving to Grand Forks to go to school at the University of North Dakota and I was wondering if anyone recommended any apartments in the area or if there were ones that I should stay away from. I've searched online and it looks like a couple that were recommended were the warehouse, south, and gallery apartments. I will be a junior transferring in the fall and will be visiting in a few weeks to check out apartments.

Hi....I have posted several posts regarding property management companies in Grand Forks. Most apartments are rented through them.
grand forks property management companies - Google Search
You can go to their individual websites for more info.
As for apartments to recommend....a lot depends on willingness to spend and if you only want to walk/bike to campus or if you dont mind driving some.
Some of the more newer apartment complexes include....McEnroe which is still being built in different phases. It is located very convenient to campus on 42nd St South....just south of Demer's.
Legacy apartments offer several buildings and are among the nicest in town and most come with underground parking. Also pretty expensive. But very good location. A bit farther south than campus....can bike in the warm months but would need car for colder months. It is very near a lot of the shopping such as Target....just north of Menards north of 32nd Ave and off 34/36th St South.
There are new Campus Place apartments right on 42nd Ave and University and a short walk from Campus. Gallery is just north of Campus and a short walk too.
There are the Hampton Apts a bit farther south and just west of the Target. Town Square townhomes for rent is a nice place for those who want more room and a 2 car garage. Both of these are on 36th Ave S.
There are newer ones as well south of Sam's and Walmart.
There are other a bit older ones but still nice and maybe a bit more reasonable in the area west of Columbia Rd and between 17th Ave South and 24th Ave South.
There are others out there that I am missing.
Warehouse apts are closer to downtown and offer a more unique big ceiling design with garages. But they are also close to railroad tracks. But not in a bad location for someone who wants to avoid living in a typical apartment box complex.
Good luck i you have a specific place in mind let me know and I can let you know how it looks, etc.
Dan

Dan thanks for the reply. I will be checking out those apartments.
For my junior year(1st year in ND) I will most likely be living by myself so all I am really looking at is a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment. Currently I have a 15 mile commute one way to school so driving is not an issue for me.
I guess one question I have that maybe you or someone else could answer is are there off campus-apartments that a lot of students at UND live at?
I'll be visiting this weekend and it looks like I picked the right weekend because its supposed to be warmer up there then it is here in Maryland.
Thanks

Hey guys, I have a co-worker whose son is starting classes at UND in Grand Forks next fall. He'd like start out with a cheap room in a rooming house to keep his living expenses low. Are there rooming houses near the campus and how much can he expect to pay?

I am not sure what a rooming house is.... but it sounds like looking for an 1 BR apartment in a house where there are several other apartments. The area just east of UND along and just north of University Ave and just east of University Park is a good idea to search for living places such as this. You can try craiglist or the grand forks herald website classifieds (apartments hq) for a start. Many rental houses (not all) are owned by property management companies. See post above with a link to a google map showing various ones in town. Contact one of those and they should lead you to something or point you in the right direction. I think 400-450/mo. would be an average price for a 1BR in an older house close to UND. Note...I havent rented in town so that is just an estimate based on some other ads I saw.

A rooming house, sometimes called a boarding house, is just like a regular house, only each room is rented individually. The bathrooms and the kitchen are common areas shared by all tenants. Let me know if there is this kind of housing in Grand Forks.

I do know there are rental properties near UND (managed by a property management company)...were you got 2-3-4 people living in a house or larlge apartment/townhome each with its own room but sharing the rest of the house. Expenses are split equally. In the GF Herald and on craiglist you will see a few listings for folks looking for roommates. If this is quite what you are looking for....then I am afraid I dont know any.

I forgot to mention that in a rooming house, the rooms are leased separately. Each tenant in a rooming house has his/her own lease. This type of housing is common in many college towns. Anything like that in Grand Forks?

Now I understand...since you said it is common in college towns there must be here too. But I havent rented here in town as I own a SFH so my experience is pretty low. I will link the various property management companies in town and suggest you call to find out. They would now. Of the ones listed in the link I would try Elite Property Management and Dakota first as they do rent homes and apartments...while some just do apartments. If anyone would know it would be them. Sorry I couldnt help more. Good luck!
