Hi all.
I've been "studying" this forum and Paul I love your photo tours. You've saved me tons of time!!

Background- we're late bloomers- from the New Hope area and I want to move us north for retiring my husband and finishing school for my girls. (Think financial wisdom and far away from yuppies and closer to nature.) I'm starting a second career in the medical field after being in travel, stay at home mom and currently working as an aide in an Autistic Preschool Classroom. My husband has been a stone mason in Bucks County for many years and we have two girls in their elementary years (3rd & 5th grade) and I want to move ideally before they start high school.

I'd like to buy some property to build on and I love lake communities, farms, but I can't live without being connected to an art community to be satisfied. We *are* spoiled with needing beautiful surroundings and the depressed coal towns don't leave us feeling cozy and warm but more sad and frustrated.
Likewise- we can't handle too much commercialism (Rte 611 is not our bag)either but we prefer downtowns to malls but realize we all need big box stores.

My one daughter will be in special ed and my other daughter is being mainstreamed. Both are nature lovers and artistically inclined. We have a friend in Monroe (Reeders) who is leaning towards Carbon County for themselves.

My favorite places thus far are: Bushkill Falls (the falls themselves), Lake Harmony, Hickory Run. Towns I like Milford, Hawley, Jim Thorpe.

I've got family in central Jersey, a brother in NYC and a sister in Washington, DC. I have another sister with kids who travels to Tioga from Central Jersey so I thought a place in between (Jim Thorpe) might be a good fit.

Am I missing a community to consider? I need good schools and I'm not into the yuppie thing- so no McMansions for me. Oh- almost forgot- my husband has to be far away from Mountaintop and Dupont- family that no longer speaks. So I want his world to be as far from theirs as possible. Otherwise, I have considered Big Bass Lake.

Does Jim Thorpe make the most sense? The feedback on the school is mixed.

Thanks a bunch!!

Outside of Jim Thorpe is Lake Hauto. You can be in the Tamaqua school district or the Panther Valley and still only 15 minutes from Jim Thorpe. They are a private community with a lake and three "beaches". Jim Thorpe does have a really good school system though. If you do settle in Thorpe make sure you are up on the mountain and not in town. (they are two different worlds)

Jim Thorpe is a cute town but I only know of it through visiting there. I live in the Honesdale area and highly recommend the Honesdale/Waymart area of Wayne county. The area surrounding these two towns is rural, with deer, turkey and even an occasional bear sighting. Waymart has the basics (supermarket, pharmacy) and not much more but is close to Honesdale and Carbondale. Honesdale has a nice downtown with cafes and boutique type stores, plus a Walmart, K-Mart, Home Depot, hospital, YMCA, public swimming pool, bowling alley, movie theater, and fast food restaurants besides mom-and-pop types. Hawley is the next town on the other side of Honesdale and is nice, too. From any of these three towns you can drive 1/2 hr to the 'big shopping' of Dickson City/ Scranton, or the country of northern Wayne county or the Dingman's/ Milford areas.
Every Monday in the summer Honesdale has free concerts in the town park. Waymart just had its annual Flag Day parade (half the town participates in it, with the other half watching). THey represent the best of modern small-town Americana.

I would consider Honesdale. It has the big box stores you need and a hospital for possible employment. Check out the photo tour and it gives you a good feel for the town. Hawley also has a very nice small-town feel to it and is not far from Honesdale. The best thing you can do is actually visit the area and spend your day driving through the various locations.

Default Planning my trip right now

Hey Bldg- thanks.
I'm planning my trip again. I've been through there but I think I really need to spend a few days as my next step.

Everything I read about WASD is impressive- each year it just gets better.
Jim Thorpe is reported to have a good district but the numbers (especially for special ed) do not compare to WASD. hmm... wonder what that *really means*?
