I just looked on my feedback, and while I'm not raking in the rep points like some people (PAUL!!), I have 2 red dots! One post is similar to Pauls, blasting someone for generalizing, but the other has me stumped. It was a positive post encouraging and wishing a poster good luck on their future move. I'm stumped on how that red dot got there....

There's truly no rhyme or reason for why some people award red dots. I've garnered some (from whom I suspect is the same one or two individuals) on quite a number of occasions due to continued bad blood from a major fight I was involved in on the NJ forum back in December 2006. I was the "bigger man" for apologizing for my role in the fracas, but I still hold grudges on that forum because from time to time certain members (who shall remain nameless) still make reference to December 2006 in current debate issues.

According to the site's terms and conditions, you're only supposed to slam someone with a red dot if they're trolling, spamming, flaming, insulting, etc.---NOT just because you happen to disagree with their opinions (which is where most of my red dots have come from). I'm shocked that someone as laid-back as you actually got red dots at all; I'd expect myself to garner them since I'm the most visible member on this forum now and being seen by more people opens you up to more scrutiny.

It's something that reduces your reputation. When you click on the little scale in the upper-right-hand corner of each reply, you can either "Approve" or "Disapprove" of the reply and leave a message if you wish describing why you feel as you do. If someone selects disapprove, then the poster in question has their reputation drop, and a "red dot" shows up when you look under your reputation comments in "My Settings." I find it to be very, very juvenile when people give out red dots like candy just because they disagree with your opinions, as that violates the site's terms & conditions. I've been on this site now for well over a year, and I can count the number of times I've given out red dots on one hand. I've even boosted the reputation of some people who have disagreed with me on political issues (same-sex civil unions, President Bush's policies in Iraq, global warming, etc.) for making me think more about the issues and for opening my eyes to other viewpoints. It's my way of "rewarding" someone for a job well done in a debate, as we "gold-bar" members can boost another member's reputation by three points at a time.

I know I take this reputation system WAY too seriously at times, but I don't think it's right for others to detract from one's reputation just because you have a difference in opinion (and that is stated as such in the regulations of this forum). I only award red dots if someone is being particularly cruel or harsh on a thread, such as name-calling, racism, badgering, etc. to try to discourage such behaviors from continuing on this otherwise civil forum.

Default Carbondale, PA and Stephen King

From someone who grew up in Carbondale, PA - I love the place and I also love all STEPEHEN KING stories!

The place is a dump and the people are mean and nasty.

Hello all. I just moved to Carbondale. My neighborhood is clean and quiet. My house is built like a fort. The restaurants like - Little Nickie's, The Ben Mar, McDonnell's, Pettinatos and Frank's are wonderful. I can be in Scranton in 15 minutes driving the speed limit and I don't have to hassle the Clarks Summit traffic snarl that promises to keep getting worse. I got my house for a song compared to some parts of Lackawanna County where the appreciation is maxed out. In other words, my house has no where to go but up.

Driving north I can be in gorgeous country in five minutes. They have completed miles and miles of rail-trails and plan to build more.

I too thought the worse of Carbondale. Know why? Ignorance. Go visit the place. I think it's a great place to invest. Think for yourself and get real facts. Remember, the herd never gets rich, the maverick does.

And, I'll bet the nay sayers in Jim Thorpe who said that place was dump 15 years ago are kicking themselves.

Good luck.

Jack

I must admit that I'm highly intrigued by Carbondale now that I've done my photo tour of it. I went from having generally negative impressions of it to having many positive impressions of it. Yes, there were a lot of people who took no pride in their homes, but then there was block after block of residential neighborhoods where just about every other home had some sort of banner or flag waving from front porches with some nice shrubs and flowers planted on their tiny front lawns. As far as "rudeness" is concerned, other than the fact that a lot of people in town had a staring problem with me, I found most people I bumped into to be quite courteous. My "good morning" greetings were returned, and one man even permitted me to cross a busy street near the YMCA when I approached a crosswalk there.

The property transfers listed in the newspaper are another good indicator of the potential that Carbondale has. I'm seeing many, many homes in the city being sold for under $100,000 to people from out-of-state. Some might think "drug houses," but I'm inclined to believe that some people might be moving to the Pioneer City in order to rehabilitate a home and raise their family there. It's a major turn-off to have so few shopping options though---I wouldn't consider a Peebles and McDonald's to be heaven. Then again, the Viewmont area is only about 15-20 minutes south along Business Route 6 and Downtown Scranton is about 20 minutes south along Route 6.

Carbondale has a bright future ahead of it, and I think having an energetic young mayor like Justin Taylor can only be a good thing.

I agree with ScrantonWilkesBarre. Justin Taylor bings fresh eyes, energy and passion to Carbondale. Things bode well. Kep you eyes onthe Carbondale Y - they are going gang busters on a multi-million dollars fund raising campaign. There are also plans for a hotel, parking garage and more.

I am the grandson of Dan Siniawa. People don't realize how much work is involved in getting a project started. Its not an over night thing to get a project started. It could take months or even years to get a project started. Carbondale is going to change and its going to be for the best.

Your grandfather now owns the Murray complex in Wilkes-Barre, right? When is work starting on that project?
