The schools are bad...they consistently rank at the bottom of all area schools in their test scores. The houses are cheap because nobody really wants to live there. There's not much of an economy in Carbondale...most people there have to drive to Scranton for work.
If you want somewhere that is near to Carbondale but much nicer...look about 15 miles to the north to Honesdale, a very nice well-kept town with a thriving little downtown with different kinds of shops and restuarants, and plenty of outdoor recreation nearby. Otherwise you're best to look further down the valley closer to Scranton. But avoid "Garbagedale" at all costs.

I am one of the "decent" people of Carbondale. I'm a professional, and one class shy of my Masters Degree. With that being said, you are 100 percent correct. There are many decent people here, but overall, this town has turned into a slum. I'm currently looking at moving to SC.
I would not suggest anyone move to this city. I agree about Honesdale. I also like some of the other valley towns, primarily Jessup and Archbald.

alright, the place is not a dump, and not all people are mean and nasty, most carbondale people are only mean and nasty if someone has offended them *cough cough* or if someone is stereotyping them *cough* or if someone is being mean/nasty to them. *COUGH COUGH!*

Kristine, I don't think many of these folks have taken the time to let Carbondale "grow" on them. I even had a very negative impression of the community until I visited for a few hours to do my photo tour and saw the potential in all of those abandoned buildings and unkempt homes. The town has a certain, unmistakeable charm to it---almost like taking a step back in time (in a good way). In my opinion I still think Scranton is a nicer place to raise a family (hence why I'm moving there), but if Carbondale were a bit more conveniently located in relation to the rest of the region I might have given it a shot. If you notice in my tour there was a run-down purple home that I was already drooling over as I pictured it fully renovated into a Victorian showplace.
I personally don't know if the Carbondale Area School District is as abysmal as it is portrayed as, but that doesn't necessarily mean the town itself is unliveable. I admire your passion for your hometown; I wish I could have the same sort of drive to believe in Pittston's eventual rebirth, but after watching stupid decision after stupid decision being made by local politicians in the city for years now I've decided to be like the rest of my college peers and let Tomato Town bite the dust in favor of greener pastures.
Viva la Carbon-Duh-Lay!

I've lived here my whole life - 34 years. My impressions are through extensive experience. I apologize they don't gel with others'. I don't really care, but I apologize nonetheless.
In my opinion, Carbondale (as a whole) is a slum. There are great people, great areas, etc. IMO, the bad outweighs the good, however.

Carbondale once called home
I lived in Carbondale, PA my whole life I just recently moved to Boise ID, after my sister, as a whole i believe that Carbondale does have alot of slum areas, and many people do live paycheck to paycheck, but that does not give anyone the right to bash on it, as amatter of fact, every city no matter where has its bad points. Please learn to respect other places or people because some of us called that place home, its not the greatest but it deserves to be respected.

Run-down purple home?
Run down? The purple home you speak of is FAR from run down. I should know...I own it. It was repainted, it has a new roof, new bathroom, refinished hardwood floors, crown molding, new plumbing...the list goes on and on. My husband and I worked tirelessly to restore that house. We had to relocate before we could finish the job but please, don't call it run-down! It's a historic gem at a very affordable price.

I apologize for having offended you, but to me the home just looks as if it needs a tremendous amount of exterior renovations to be habitable. I won't dispute that the interior of the home might be immaculate after receiving some much-need TLC from you, but if you concentrate all of your energies on the inside of your home while neglecting the outside, then tourists to the town, like myself, are going to assume the house is "run-down." Likewise I've seen some homes here in Pittston with vinyl siding, shutters, newer windows, etc. that look like Beirut on the inside. When the exteriors of homes are showing as much wear and tear as is evident in this photo, then your entire community looks depressing.
