Things I miss about Scranton (and PA in general)

I spent the first 18 years of my life in the area (OLD FORGE). That was almost 40 years ago. I left for the military and then work in Phila. I have lived in NJ since 1982 yet every time I visit my parents there, the old town atmosphere still intoxicates me & makes me long for the small town, slow paced feeling. I have never been able to experience that feeling no matter where I've lived. I vow to make the area my final retirement destination. If you are fortunate enough to be able to live & work in the area, don't ever take it for granted because once you leave it, you will probably wish you didn't.

I know that feeling. I lived in NJ a good portion of my life and yet....the feelings run deep for this state I now call home. I never had that relaxed feeling or the feeling of loving the "land" so much....as here in PA. Its the niceness of the people, the valleys and the mountains.......the lakes and the rivers. Old towns and farms.......places and things to do.
Some just don't take the time to take it all in.......To understand how nice it is to live here.
Just stand on Big Pocono State Park Mountain........or stand looking down on Scranton at night from the Dickson City hills.....Visit the State Parks....Go boating on the lake.
All those places take my breath away.....

What are you doing in Albuquerque??
I was stationed at Kirtland AFB for a couple of years assigned to the Weapons Lab (AFWL).
I think its called Phillips Labs now and a civilian facility.
I met my wife there who was also in the AF at the time.
She is from here (NEPA) and after we married she talked me into moving to the area in '95 .
I'm originally from Ventura, CA. so you can imagine the adjustments I had to make.
Still, I think the pros outweigh the cons.
You can admire, or compalin, about any part of the country.
It's all what you make of it.

I don't miss much about the area - because once here, I never left.

Moved from Bucks County to Scranton in the mid-60's. Lived in (and loved) Scranton for seven years, and moved (because of spouse's job) to Forty Fort in '75. I've been here for 35 years and have no plans on leaving.

I have five sons, all married with families, all employed, as are their spouses, (at excellent-paying jobs) and all living within an hour's drive of my home.

With so many things to see and do, one could spend a lifetime and not partake of it all.

The ever-changing landscape, depending on the season, makes waking up every day a surprise.
Sports, recreation, entertainment, education, exceptional medical care, enough shopping to satisfy every need, wish, or want. Restaurants offering everything from "Way too expensive" to "Way too much fat". While we wait to see who's indicted next, we have so many other activities to occupy our time. Swimming, skiing, skating, triatholon, hiking, camping, fishing, hunting (if that's your thing), gambling at the casino(s), (if that's your thing). Indeed, we have problems. Show me an area that doesn't and I'll show you Utopia. But you have to try to make it better. Meanwhile, enjoy what's good.

Perhaps the general population doesn't boast the sophistocation of larger, more cosmopolitan areas, but I say there's room for everybody. And sometimes naivete is refreshing.

Great post...and the people who think Scranton and Wilkes-Barre are just crime-infested holes in the ground obviously haven't been in too many other cities. Sure, there's some things to be concerned about here, but I still think overall, the good outweighs the bad.

WOW!!!! I concur.......believe me.....Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has so much to offer.....I just wish I realized that fact before I moved and remember: The grass always looks "greener" on the other side of the fence! PITTS.
