More often than not, private insurance won't cover things like in the OP. We have private insurance but when our older son needed to go to EI, private insurance wouldn't pay.

Medicaid is not welfare. It is getting medical coverage through the government where it doesn't exist in the private sector - at least not affordable.

No one balks at taking govt insurance money for disasters - tornadoes, floods, hurricanes - which are simply conditions beyond the ordinary coverage of private sector insurance. I don't see what is the big issue concerning govt insurance money for health needs when those needs are beyond the ordinary.
