This time next year...
...I'll be an old-timer around here, with 3500 posts, rolling my eyes at every newbie that comes in with, "Moving to PA, help!!" I'll post in response to them, but I'll be a wise-acre about it. "Why don't they use the search engine," I'll ask myself, "...and spare us all from the repetitive drivel?"
For now, I'll be the newbie. Let's play "Jeopardy"!
I'll take 'original topics' for $300, Alex
"Moving to PA! Help!!"
We're (wife, three of our five kids) 2/3rds of the way through the purchase of our first home, at Tanglwood. ("At"? "In"? "On"? Whatever is most facetious.) We've got some friends at Wild Acres in Dingman's, but didn't like the way things were set up there. (I'm thinking there must be a better use for the phrase 'Dingman's Wild Acres' than just an address.)
We've got all the usual questions. How's the Greentown/Tanglwood neighborhood? (That's hard to research.) How's the HOA? How're the schools ? (Kids are 13, 7 and 5) How's the fishing?
I'm keeping my job with the State of NY. What's the deal with income taxes when you live in one state and work in another?
I keep hearing you can't have rust on your car at all. What's the deal there?
How soon do I have to swap over my NY tags to PA tags? We just renewed ours a month or so ago.
Most importantly, what happened to the 'e' in "Tanglwood" ? It looks like syntax error, spelled that way!
My favorite thing about Pennsylvania is that there are two towns located near the long-suffering Borough of Centralia with more appropriate names.
C'mon. "Ashland" and "Shamokin"? You've got to be kidding me.

You say, "Why don't they use the search engine," I'll ask myself, "...and spare us all from the repetitive drivel?"
I say, "Is not a search engine repetitive drivel?" It leads to lone self diagnosis and that could be very dangerous. I would rather make a decision with live boots on the ground with up to date info. It is like depending on PBS versus FoxNewsLive.

If you do a search for "Greentown" I'm sure several recent posts will come up. There is a photo tour. Tanglwood, if I'm not mistaken, is fairly close to Hawley and not too far from Honesdale. Hawley has a picturesque main street and also boasts a CVS and IGA food store. Nice to have those stores close by. You will find that Greentown also has an assortment of local stores....new food store, a "mom & pop" type drug store, Agway, bank, garden center, auto repair, tire center, several "main street" type restaurants, doctor's offices, dental offices, etc. Greentown itself is a small town and is usually referred to as the Newfoundland/Greentown area. I'll also be new to the area (from Long Island) and will be living in Sugar Hill Estates (small community, low dues, no ammenties except for road maintenance and garbage service). Welcome to the area!

I forgot to mention that Honesdale is home to Wayne County Memorial Hospital, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc. There is also a great photo tour of Honesdale for you to look at. It looks like a great town as well!

I also forgot to mention one of the best assets in the area....Promised Land State Park. We were there two weeks ago. Beautiful lake, rowboats & kayaks for rent, beach, immaculate rest room facilties, covered pavillions, picnic tables and grills and NOT ONE PIECE OF LITTER IN SITE!

Moving to PA is not the answer. You lose $300.

Yep. He should have rephrased the response in the format of a question, right? "What is: Pennsylvania is the best state in the nation?"

Shazbot! Down $300 already...and I still haven't paid the home inspector. That'll be Sunday. (This Sunday, the 8th.)
So...does anybody know anything I need to know? Is there crime? If not, do I need a license to form my own syndicate/territory, which would feature reverse newspaper honor box raids (overstuff with competing newspapers), mailbox flag flips, and my personal favorite, yonney-bopping! I have no idea what a yonney is, or how to properly bop one, but I am a fast learner.
Also, cable or dish? And what amenities come with Tanglwood, as the .org site is not open unless you already have a username, which you can't have until you buy a house there...

Skiing? I havent heard of much crime. Some of the developments in the area have bad reps-- but not the ones from Hawley to Greentown, and Tanglwood is a nice one. The school is pretty good. We have blue ridge cable but we arent the biggest tv watchers. We also have blue ridge for the internet-- we are big puter users. Being in Tanglwood you can go to either Hawley or Greentown to grocery shop or bank- the dime bank is in Greentown-hawley -and Honesdale, its ok for a bank- not the best or the worst. I love the summers here- and hate the Jan-May time of snow and Ice then slush and Mud! But all in all it is a beautiful area with good people!

Finally! "Blue Ridge Cable"....okay. I see a lot of dishes up that way, is why I'm asking. Definitely need high speed online. I'm thinking the crime is going to be a non-factor, as well...even though some of the ratings for personal crimes were through the roof for the area. (I won't go into that here, in a family website.)
Anybody know which amenities come with a Tanglwood residence? The rules aren't available to me yet.
The home inspection went so-so. I won't spam by saying who I used; just that it was a very nice husband and wife team who were very thorough yet concise...not at all long-winded in their descriptions. We found some carpenter ant problems, and a bunch of guano on one window...which pointed to a rather serious problem on a roof overhang.
Who's the electric company around there? How does the water bill work?
Questions aplenty!
Still waiting to hear from a fisher(person).
