Lucky you! I can't tell you about race-related things, but it SUCH a pretty little town! Keep in mind it's a tourist destination, so you'll be dealing with lots of people and traffic, especially on weekends. Lehigh Gorge is beautiful. Best wishes in your move! (P.S.- also check out the Lehigh Valley section of this forum, as there may be more info there)

Well, since the town changed it's name from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe when they buried the Native American sports hero there, I'd venture to guess they are pretty open minded.
There is presently a lawsuit brought by a Thorpe relative to take the remains of ole Jim back to Oklahoma.

If you like the outdoors, there is plenty of fishing, mountain biking, etc, and as mentioned before - it's very "touristy".

The streets and architecture resemble some old towns in Colorado and yes it's very nice at Xmastime.

I'm not really into antique and craft shops - the town seems to be chock full of them..

Jim Thorpe is really two towns - the small, touristy downtown on one side of the Lehigh River, with several restaurants, galleries, local tour outfitters. Two blocks wide, 1/3 mile long very tightly packed. Lots of Indian and Eastern European/ex-Soviet Block tourist on the weekends, along with US born tourists from NJ, NY and Philadelphia. The "typical small town" half is on the other side of the river with single family homes, schools, supermarket, corner bars, sandwich shops. That side of town is almost entirely white residents, and tourists just drive through on Route 903, which is in effect "Main STreet" but called something different.

wy wife and i went to see molly hatchet there last year. it was cool but i thought i bought reserved seats being as they had seat numbers on them. however we found out that you just find the best spot and take a seat. the food in the restaurant upstairs was so-so. overall though i would go back if i wanted to see a certain band badly enough. it is different than the bigger venues that's for sure.

What does it matter?? This question is asked many times by people moving out here to NEPA and my answer is that it's what you make it...don't go making a spectacle of yourself and conduct yourself in an adult civilized manner and everyone could less if you were purple with 3 eyes!! I met a guy here on the NEPA board who has a log cabin home for sale and since I love log cabin homes invited me over to his annual BBQ at the cabin with his family and neighbors and we hit it off. Him and his wife were so happy to have invited us over and that we came and we had a great time. Lot's of food, drink, a pool to cool off in, and karaoke till the wee hours. This just from meeting here on city data NEPA board. So as I said: as long as you conduct yourself in a civilized manner you shouldn't have a problem!!

I've never been discriminated against due to my race so i don't know what that feels like. I was raised to treat everyone equally and hopefully i do a decent job of that. However to pretend that racism doesn't exist is unrealistic. There are areas of this country that are still full of disgusting, predjudiced people. Pennsylvania has areas that are like that. Near me in berks county there is a fairly large percentage of german, dutch, people and some of those folks are definitely racists and can make life uncomfortable for people that they don't like. It doesn't matter how nice or hard working the people are; if they are on "the list" then they discrimate against them to the point that they will try to run them out of town.
Anyway, i don't blame people for putting feelers out there to try to find out what an area is like. It would really suck to be a minority (of any sort) and move into an area that has kkk or aryian nation people surrounding them. Pennsylvania has more than it's fair share of racists in certain ares of the state. I've been to jim thorpe and it seems fine to ME...
