Thumbs down Disliked living in pa Big time

we lived in a Town called Lehighton and the folks were the rudest I have ever met. Not to say that allot of them have never left the area, and had allot to say about ever other state. Jim Trope is also a hole.. This place is going to stay the same forever..Don't move their..You will be very disappointed.

That's odd. I have heard nothing but good things about Jim Thorpe.

There are rude people and nice people everywhere. Get used to it.

I wouldn't be so quick to criticize the people of Jim Thorpe. Granted, I drove through Lehighton en route to Jim Thorpe for my highly-acclaimed photo tour, and that particular town was very depressing, to say the least, but I found the people of Jim Thorpe to be kind and considerate. As a pedestrian, I had a number of motorists stop to permit me to cross busier stretches of Broadway, and all of my "Good mornings" to passers-by were returned with a smile.

As far as "having a lot to say about every other state" is concerned, I'll agree with that. For some reason or other, a lot of people in Northeastern Pennsylvania are VERY anti-NY and anti-NJ, and I suspect it might have to do with how Monroe County's quality-of-life has gone downhill since the "city took over" in the past two decades in particular. Whenever I gleam with pride about what the new commuter rail from Scranton to Hoboken, NJ might do to help we twenty-something, college-educated types who wish to live in Scranton and commute to work in NJ or NY, I'm met with hysteria about "this will bring drug addicts, homeless people, gangs, etc.", simply because the locals are so anti-NY and anti-NJ. For what it's worth, while I've met a LOT of rude people from NJ (just check out how nasty there are too each other on their own state forum), mostly everyone whom I've met from NYC has been pleasant to be around.

As ConorsDad said, there are good apples and bad apples everywhere, and I doubt Carbon County has cornered the market on them.

Default Well I am not from either of those places???

I am from north carolina and I have been to NJ and ny and have come in contact with a much a better quality of a folks.. Then again these are upscale areas.. We are talking about..

The folks from these two areas are back in time..With no get up to go to work very lazy... Just drinking and dealing drugs.. I;m not sure but the folks that I did see looked very much like locals..How you know is? Just look inside their mouth and you will find no teeth, and they eat junk..

I've never seen such a group of folks in my life that do not know anything about food.
The quality of the folks are not good,..

Those two places have a lot to learn..I really can only feel sorry for them, that they are in this small box and venture to no other places very small minded folks. You can only feel for them....what a shame... To live like that..

One of my pet peeves is over-generalization. NEPA is filled with all types. You mention NJ and NY. Gimme a break. You telling me that you don't run into the weirdest of the weird in NJ or NY. Sure Pa has some redneck areas. I live in south fla and if you drive 30 minuets inland it is like going back in time 100 yrs. I love NEPA for its people. Now that I live outside the area, i realize how great people from that area are. Sure some are dolts but most have big hearts and will give you the dirty shirt off their back if they thought you needed it.

no place is without its slummy area. Geez, your from north Carolina, How many teeth do YOU have!?!?! haha jk country boy

I happen to know Lehighton area people who are not as you distinguish them.
They golf, and go on cruises, and travel just like the rest of Americans do.
They do not have unkind words towards others either.
I'm not sure of which area you lived, but I have only met nice people in that area. Friendly, kind and helpful to those around.

You may have been in a bad area of town, which all towns have unfortunately.

I don't hear you discuss the beauty of Jim Thorpe........the highest of mountains, coming down into the deep valley. The cute little antique stores......the rafting rivers.

Yes, it is an old town, but a grand town........full of beauty and life.

Life may not give you along the way a better friend, then those of Pa. Speaking as one who lived in NJ and visit NY many, numerous times.

The sudden influx of NY and NJ people in the Poconos has been bad for the area, but its because of the sudden influx of a lot of people and the strain on the infrastructure that has been bad....its not because the newcomers happen to be from NY or NJ.

That sounds like a bad generalization of local people. You could come up with negative sterotypes for people anywhere you go... your stereotype of people from that area is as closed-minded as saying that all New Yorkers are rude, all Mexicans are lazy, all Irish are drunks, all Italians are mobsters, etc etc etc. And you, from North Carolina, shouldn't be talking about hillbillies.... NC has its share as well.

Well, I feel as though I've been personally slapped in the face!

My family roots are in Jim Thorpe and Carbon County. Several of my grandfather's siblings lived in Lehighton. My mom was born in Lehighton and my dad was born in Jim Thorpe. Both my parents were raised in Jim Thorpe and graduated from high school there.

My mom was a stay-at-home mom by choice but she is very well educated and knowledgeable. My dad became a national bank examiner and later the vice president of the commercial division of a large bank.

My mom was an only child, but my dad's siblings also did quite well for themselves. One brother went into banking, one became an engineer and has traveled all over the U.S., and one became the principal of a prestigious high school outside Boston. My dad's sister was a CPA in the Washington DC area.

People from Jim Thorpe do quite well in life. To say that "this place is going to stay the same forever" is just ridiculous. My parents graduated from high school in the late 1950s and there have been MANY positive changes in Jim Thorpe in that amount of time.

I even lived in Lehighton myself for a while as a small child and there have been vast improvements to that town since the 1960s as well.

It's a coal region and you will always find some backward people and those who "don't get out much" in those areas, but to say that everyone is "rude", into drugs, and are hillbillies with no teeth is just plain ignorant on your part. I can guarantee you that the people in Jim Thorpe (the local, home-grown ones - not the NY/NJ transplants) would willingly give you the shirt off their back or the last dollar in their pocket to help you out.

Shame on you, Forest Drive, for your nasty comments. I don't usually confront someone on this forum, but this was personal for me and my family. We've been insulted and I don't like it one bit. It seems like you'd better stick to your "upscale areas" and leave the common, down-to-earth folks alone. I'm sure they're all better off with you!
