Default What's Drums like?

Hey everyone!
Can you tell me a bit about what Drums is like? Good city to move to or should we focus more on Mountain Top, Wyoming etc.?
Thanks a lot!

Hello there!

Comparing Drums to Mountain Top is like comparing apples to...well...other apples! LOL! Drums, which is technically called "Butler Township", is a bit further south of Mountain Top and is home to a growing community of Hazleton-area commuters. The juncture of I-80 and I-81 occurs here, and Route 309 is the primary north-south artery through town.

Butler Township, if I'm not mistaken, is now the fastest-growing community in Luzerne County, with a population of over 7,000 now, most of whom live in large planned communities like Beech Mountain Lakes or Sand Springs. The community has a "woodsy" yet suburban feel to it, with just about every home located on a relatively-small lot that has a pristinely-wooded backdrop ripe for exploring. There's pretty much no crime in Butler Township other than the occasional DUI or reckless teenager smashing a mailbox.

Mountain Top is quite similar to Drums, although there's a bit more of a "keeping up with the Jones's" aura there. There actually is no such place as Mountain Top---it is the combination of five townships:

Dennison
Dorrance
Fairview
Rice
Wright

While Drums is home to a lot of Chalet-style homes and bi-levels, Mountain Top is home to a lot of newer "McMansion"-style dwellings. Basically, envision a two-story, vinyl-sided home with a front-facing two-car garage, driveway entrance pillars, shutters, and neutral interior decor on a half-acre lot or so in the $250,000 and up price range in a subdivision with a "cute" name, and you'll have much of Mountain Top pegged quite well. I believe Mountain Top is now approaching 20,000 residents, most of whom commute to Wilkes-Barre for work.

Butler Township (Drums) is part of the Hazleton Area School District, which doesn't have a great reputation, but in nearby Freeland is MMI Prep, a better private school. Mountain Top is home to the Crestwood School District, which consistently battles Dallas for the best overall ranking for public school districts in Luzerne County. There's not much to do in either community---Route 309 through both Mountain Top and Drums is home to some fast-food places, gas stations, chain drugstores, banks, etc., but you'll have to head to either Wilkes-Barre or Hazleton for any sort of "box" stores or nightlife. If you don't have a car and live in Drums or Mountain Top, life will be a living hell. Driving up and down the mountain can be very trying during snow storms, so a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle would be recommended if you decide to move to either community and need to get to Wilkes-Barre during the wintertime.

I don't quite know why you threw Wyoming into the mix. It's a nice small town with a pretty good school district, but it's nothing at all like either Mountain Top or Drums. Wyoming is an older town that doesn't have the "suburban" feel of Mountain Top or the "wooded" feel of Drums. Basically, Mountain Top might be similar to "Desperate Housewives", Drums might be similar to Poconos before they were "discovered", and Wyoming would be quintissential small-town America.

Happy house hunting, and welcome in advance to Luzerne County!

If you are a transplant from out of the area Mountaintop may be the best bet. You will find more families there who are also transplants and looking to make friends. The downside is many are relocated every couple of years, so you constantly have to make new friends.

Drums may be more of people who are born and raised and not quite as friendly. There are also some people with second homes from Philly that live in some neighborhoods in Drums. At the same time it is probably cheaper and you can get more land for your $.

Default Unfriendly Mountaintop

Have to say Mountaintop is very unfriendly. I have lived there for years and it is getting worse. All these young people moving in and trying to take over. And trying to outdo eachother.
Biggest mistake of my life was moving here. But my husband was born here and thought it was a nice place, at first.
When we retire we will definitely move from here. And must worn you the taxes are sky high. You better have a very good job to live here. And the mountain is a living hell to drive down to get to work. And sometimes driving back home after work is even worse!
I like Drums. Nice and quiet. And the people there are very friendly. Take my advise and move to Drums.

I lived in Drums from 2002 - 2005 and although I loved our development, I spent every day driving up to Mountaintop!

I stay home with three young kids and since many young families in Mountaintop are not from the area, they were more in to getting together and meeting new people.

Drums was friendly and all, but if I had it to do over again, I would have moved to Mountaintop and saved on gas.

Also, the Crestwood school district is way better than the Hazleton SD.
