Really? I always thought that was just a legend. That's sort of like here in DC where the rumor has it that Georgetown doesn't have a subway station because the well-to-do there wanted to help keep the "element" (and you know what that means) from other parts of the city out. I would really think they'd want to preserve the river views---not views of Pittston. Other than St. John the Evangelist Church there's really not a whole lot "scenic" about Pittston from the other side of the river. In fact, the running joke I always remember was "The best thing about Pittston is the view of West Pittston."

Reston, it is not a rumor. After`the Agnes Flood of 72, and subsequent floods in the early 90's, the Army Corp of Engineers considered building the levee system along the banks of the Susque at West Pittston.

The plan was shot down by the towns residents and the powers that be..

The funny thing is that unless you stand right on top of the present earthen bank where the cherry trees are planted, or sit in a 2nd story room of one of the mansions on Susquehanna Avenue, you can't even see the river from the West Pittston side.

Their view, for the most part, are the church steeples in Pittston, and the orange iron-oxide coated shoreline on the Pittston side caused by acid-mine drainage..

If you go to White Haven, be sure to hit the White Haven Diner and order a cheeseburger. Just make sure you're hungry first. LOL

I am interested in the recommendations that NE PA residents have on great small walkable towns North and/or East of Wilkes Barre/Scranton. The more outdoorsy and artsy the better.
My wife and I took a walk around Hawley a few weeks ago. It's kinda small but it was nice and there were a few shops we enjoyed walking thru.
