Well the past weeks have been amazing and wonderful!
I do not advise a moajor move during the holiday season, umpacking while gift shopping and wrapping gifts are not easily done. Nor is decorating a house as one unpacks.

However we are thoroughly enjoying Wilkes Barre life! We had an inpromptu dinner party which included several new friends who happened to drop by at the same time as my brother in law was visiting. I made a big pot of veggie chillie which I served up with some delicious bread from Wegman's - Rosemary and Sea Salt, and a tossed salad.

Our gusts stayed after dinner and together we watched "A Christmas Story" and I realised how much Wilkes Barre has in common with the Indiana city depicted in that flick. I think my neighbors may be related to the Bumpass family - but they are nice folks none the less!

My daughter made winter cheerleading and her first game is tonight! My son has an endless parade of friends who drop by and hang out. I dearly love teenaged boys - especially this friendly outgoing and affable bunch!

It's nice not having to get dressed and walk down a long sloping driveway to get one's mail - I just open the door and reach out! My neighbors are a diverse and welcoming bunch.

We looked for the right house for a long time but it was sooo worth it!
In the evening I love to wach the pale winter's sun, swalloed like a lemon drop by the winter sky. It is then that The city scape glitters with lights and we are so happy to live this life of siplicity and human connection.
We know that we are home!

Bravo...the move up here was the best thing we did for our youngest! Glad you are truly happy with your newly adopted home town!

Sheena, your story can be echoed by many others I'm sure who have fled the stress, insane cost-of-living, and generally impersonal nature of the immediate BosWash Corridor, including myself. I've been in Pittsburgh a few weeks now after leaving the rat-race of NoVA/DC, and I'm a totally changed person. There's more important things in life than making a high salary, "keeping up appearances", one-upping your neighbors (whom you barely know), etc. I cry tears of happiness living here whereas in NoVA I'd cry so much for the opposite reason I'd get sick.

Wilkes-Barre is by no means perfect. However, it's doing something right in the past few years especially if the Downtown is turning around and if even the decades-long population nosedive has stopped. I'm so elated to hear that you are not regretting your move up here. I certainly do hope that the Diamond City continues to love up to (and surpass) your expectations. PA's cities need love after decades of neglect and decay borne from shameful urban sprawl.

my Immediate fam moved out of WB when I was seven yrs. old.

Many family members stayed, and even more moved back as the years went by...
I have never missed a yearly trip back, except for 1969 (military) and 1972 when I was traveling Abroad and the flood hit.

Wilkes -Barre brings me peace, solace, and happiness...so many wonderful memories...

Thomas Wolfe said 'you can never go home again'

Yeah, you can, I do every year,

Thank you to everyone who has wished us well! I really do hope to meet some of you soon! DM me if you want to meet!
I am glad that you have found yourself at home in Pittsburgh, Paul!
Moving to NEPA was the BEST thing we ever did as a family and for ourselves! My children are great and always have been - but the people I am meeting here share my values much more than those on LI. I know how you feel lovinbloom!
We are not competitive materialistic nor are we greedy or avaricious! NOT everyone on Long Island or in NY is that way. Most people are denizens of their domicile by accident of birth and not by choice.
Good people live everywhere - but places DO develop a vibe or a spirit that sometimes colors the atmosphere and the attitude of those who live there.
I went back to Long Island on Wednesday, to take care of some final business. We had dinner at a family Italian Restaurant and stopped at a local shopping mall.
I could literally feel the stress and tension of others, and the desire to compete was palpable.
The North Shore of Long Island is starkly beautiful but very wealthy. If you find yourself a member of the middle class - you may feel as though you are a kid with her nose perpetually pressed against a pane of glass at a store that is too expensive.
Not a good feeling.
When we left Long Island and headed home, we felt relief. No sadness. No envy or sorrow. Just happiness.
This is our home now. There is peace in the valley, at least for us.
We hope that everyone finds the peace and joy that we have found!
