Merely my opinion, but I'd choose to live in Berwick over Scranton if I had to make the decision.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. But if that's the case, then city life probably isn't for you, and the issue of downtown development really offers more of an indirect benefit to you. Better career opportunities, better wages, better education, better entertainment, better infrastructure, and so on -- all without touching your taxes.

I can't say that I agree...Berwick to me, doesn't look like it has much going for it....I got kind of a dumpy backwoods West Virginia vibe from driving through Berwick....maybe some people like isolation, but there's really nothing in that area without driving at least 40 minutes. Add to that there's a nuclear power plant just outside of town, and it makes Scranton look pretty appealing.
But to each their own. As someone who toots Wilkes-Barre's horn and seems to like living in a city, I'm surprised you'd rather Berwick. As Scranton is pretty much similar to Wilkes-Barre, only with lower crime.

ROFLMAO......The mere fact that you would equate the trem "city Life" with living in downtown Scranton is a the funniest thing that I have heard in days, if not months...
Have you ever actually lived in a real city, Harrisburg doesn't really count either..

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^We Luv is the official definer of "real cities".
I called to verify this at the real city definer office, located in Virginville Pa.
Sorry weluvpa, for once I am agreeing with LHVN...Scranton is a Real city, urban decay, antiquated infrastructure, no true supermarket, corrupt Mayor, roads similar to a mine field, yuppies living in overpriced condos fleeing for long weekends, bars, social cliques whose only purpose is to stroke each other when face to face, and back stab at every opporunity...yup sure is a city!
No true supermarket? There's Giant, Redner's, Weis, Gerrity's, Brunetti's among others....and Redner's is right on the edge of downtown.
And no doubt we have corrupt politics (a corrupt mayor for sure, but if you don't think
Janet Evans and others are corrupt, you're delusional)...show me an honest politician, and I'll show you a bridge I have for sale.
Ummmmm...downtown? Sorry none of them are down town. Listen dude, if I bother you so much...you really do not need to respond. I have had enough of your personal insults for no reason. What ever your issue is I suggest you take a pill, see a counselor or maybe go get stuffed! Any of those three will surely relieve some of your hostility.
Delusional? Really...this area is INFAMOUS for a climate of corruption, going back a hundred years! Where did I ever say it was unique to Scranton anyway???? The level, the time span and the out right broad daylight I do not care who sees who knows and the bragging, yes...that is rather unusal but so is many behaviors that seem common in this place here.

Meh. I spend a decent amount of time Berwick because we have close friends that live there as well as my husband's relatives. Certainly not a "backwoods" area. I feel I have a more informed opinion on the area than someone who "has just driven through it". Berwick is more aesthetically pleasing to me than Scranton. Just a matter of personal taste. No need to get silly about it.

I agree. I think Scranton gets alot of ridicule because it "acts" like a big city, and it simply is not. It just seems to me that the mayor, the local news, and certain groups try to sell Scranton as a cosmopolitan, artsy fartsy, high society metro, when in fact it is a dying, post industrial, blue collar town. Maybe in North Dakota Scranton would pass as a major city, but in the shadow of New York, Philly, Washington etc. it is a tiny insignifigant town. When i see your snobby mayor claiming that Scranton is Pennsylvania's best city, I can't help but roll my eyes. Perhaps he never left Lackawanna County! It's this high flutin' attitude that often gets Scranton at the butt end of many jokes (and well deserved in my opinion). Scranton has much more in common with Shickshinny then it does with NYC in my opinion. Everytime you open a newspaper or turn on the news you hear Mayor Doherty braggin about some gala or how great Scranton is. Well everytime I'm up there I see a city with all of the same problems Wilkes-Barre has. Empty storefronts, dirty neighborhoods, crumbling infrastructure. If Scranton was a person it would be the dorky suburban white kid that acts and tries so hard to be a big city gangsta rapper...it's fake, it's an act, and everyone seems to know it but him...(that's my opinion of Scranton in a nutshell) The sad fact is Scranton wouldn't be such a bad place if it accepted what it really is and stopped trying to be something it is not. It's a mediocre small city that brags way to much about it's mediocrity. I also think that is why Scranton often places in national magazines in a less then flaturing light (many times a "worst of" something or other), and is often the butt of many jokes. It is a dying, rust belt, small city...everyone seems to know this but Scranton itself. To city residents it way seem like hometown pride, but to the rest of the world you look like pompous a$$e$, bragging about something mediocre, like the whole Joe Biden thing. Firsts of all the guy is the biggest two faced polotician I have ever seen, he left Scranton when he was ten (never to return BTW), and blatantly uses Scranton like a cheap ***** whenever it is in his interest or when he is campaigning for something. He has been a Delaware resident for the last 50 years!!! but Scranton acts like he is "thier son" and he is something to brag about and be proud of. If that is your big claim to fame, you can keep it! It's that pompous attitude that really turns me off. That's one of many examples. That's just my opinion
