Where Are Lackawanna County's New Residents Coming From? Where Are They Headed?
After recently posting my new photo tour of Ithaca, NY, I lingered around on the NY forum a little bit and sauntered into a thread by BellaFinzi regarding demographic trends in Onondaga County, NY (Syracuse), her home. She provided me with a link to a resource that uses IRS tax records to track where residents in each county in the United States are moving from and to.
I decided to take a similar approach to our area. Since most of our forum members seem to reside in Lackawanna County as this point in time, I'll use this county as an example.

Now, one might look at this table above and say to themselves "Wow! Lackawanna County is growing tremendously!" However, I'd be remiss to not also include a table that shows the counties that Lackawanna Countians moved to during the same period as well, which nearly erased all of those hefty gains to a net gain of only 80 residents.

While we gained many residents from out-of-state, it is also a sad trend to see so many residents are moving from Lackawanna County to areas outside of PA as opposed to other parts of the state.

If anyone would like me to do a similar analysis for a different local county, please let me know!

ScrantonWilkesBarre, since my posts gave you two ideas....1. taking photos of Scranton area communities 2. demographic trends in the Scranton area....would you please give me the courtesy of two requests?
My first request is this: please do not bring up the topic of sprawl in threads about the Syracuse area. My second request is do not post about Scranton in threads devoted to the topic of Syracuse.
Do we have a deal?

Wow, thanks! Hope I didn't offend you. Never meant to if I did.
If you feel I invaded your Scranton thread, I can delete all this. Probably should. Yes?

Nope. Don't delete it. LOL! No offense taken at all. In fact, it's come to my attention as of late that my civic pride for my hometown is actually turning people off to the city because I'm coming off as being overzealous. I'm just tiring of every other person who lives in NEPA whining about it being a "dump" while not getting off their derrieres to attempt to rectify it. On the other hand, I'm content with raising my family in this city in the future because I DO believe it has a brighter future ahead of it, despite all the negativity. When you were nominated as the runner-up for "Armpit of America," there's nowhere to go but UP!
For what it's worth, I poke my nose into the Upstate NY forum so much because I'm intensely-interested in it. I hope to eventually do a fourth photo tour of Upstate NY of Elmira, and I may then do a fifth of Cooperstown. Upstate NY and PA are quite similar in character, which is why I think I like it so much.

It seems like the places that people from NY that are moving to NE PA the people from NE PA are moving to those places also, and some other favorites.
Both have migration back in forth to Brooklyn, Queens, Suffolk, NJ, Florida, intresting..

Is the IRS link available? I would love to see a comparable analysis of Wilkes Barre, but would be interested in seeing some related data, and am more than happy to roll my own.

Posts about other areas can be very valuable if there is an appropriate hook involving the topic of the thread. For example if there is a thread that is discussing the impact of a new college campus in Springfield, MA, and someone from Springfield, OR opines about the impact the opening of a college campus had on that city 20 years ago, I believe that could be very useful for the people reading the original thread even though its geographically off topic.
I guess when inserting ourselves into threads for other areas, it's important to ensure that our posts has something pertinent to say either in comparison or contrast.
Oh, and where's that IRS link? Could prove very interesting.
