I might be taking a job with the Army at the base there. I don't know much about this area, any info would be helpful. Myself and my wife are into the outdoors as well as nightlife activities (dining, sports bars ect...). What would be a good medium where either wouldn't be too far away? Also what's the general cost of living in the area? Rent? Thanks in advance!

There is another family asking the same question “Transferring to Tobyhanna Army Depot. Need home adviceabout eleven threads before yours. You might want to check out the replies to the OP.

By the way; Tobyhanna does have a good state park and nice lake. There are also plenty of other state parks and lakes in the surrounding areas.

Tobyhanna is pretty much trashed. I commute 40 minutes to work up that way and i would never consider living there. And even if you are lucky and don't have to deal with trashy neighbors, you still have to deal with these people at burger king or any other place they might be out in public. I ventured down 611 to mt pocono on my lunch break one day and basically saw a flash mob . I mean the gang type of flash mob (like the kind inner city kids in have been doing lately) not the stupid dance type of mob. Now that i think of it, everytime i have been in the general area of that town in the last 10 years and interacted with some of the people there, I lost a little more faith in mankind.

Sorry to be a downer, i will say i have limited exposure to that town other than work and some shopping. Some other people that actually live in that area might have a better insight into it(or actually like it). IMO There are a lot better places to live not too far away from there down i380. But lets just hope the cancer does not spread. The commute isn't too bad unless you rent somewhere where you would have to use I81. And 81 isn't even that bad considering what traffic is like in big cities. During the Winter is considerably more difficult of a drive though.

The closer to I80 and I380, and the further south or east along those roads, the less desirable the area to a lot of folks, due to the influx of a bad element from NJ.
