Fred Maier, great great great grandson of Charles Stegmaier, who brewed the first lager beer in Northeastern Pennsylvania 160 years ago, is one of the principles in Susquehanna Brewing Co., a production brewery in Pittson, Luzerne County, which was announced last spring. He told the Beer Yard today that extensive renovations and improvement on the site, which was the former warehouse of wholesaler United Beverage, should wrap up by the end of next month, just in time for the arrival of a 50bbl BrauKon brewhouse from Germany.
Maier, his father Ed and partner Mark Nobile are making an $8 to $10 million investment in the new plant. Ed Maier and Mobile owned United Beverage, which they close in August 2010. The elder Maier Maier was the one who closed the original Stegmaier Brewery and sold the brand to The Lion in 1974. If things go as scheduled, Susquehanna will begin making beer in November and starting selling it in December. The partners say it will be "a German-style brewery." They plan to produce five year round beers as well as seasonals. Plans are to start with distribution in Northeastern Pennsylvania and expand from there. A brewer has been offered terms of employment and they are awaiting his signature on the contract. "He is still gainfully employed elsewhere," Fred Maier explained.--JACK CURTIN

Yea, I think that is going to be in that former Budweiser distributer at the far end of the Pittston Bypass, I think that is actually either Jenkins Twp or Yatesville.
