The President of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Crime Watch in Scranton's West Side was targeted for her work to stop crime in the city, specifically in West Side. Nice....

Crime Watch President Victim of Arson (http://www.wnep.com/wnep-crime-watch-president-victim-of-arson-20111014,0,5518912.story - broken link)

Neighbors said it happened right in front of Foster's home on Jackson Street.
They believed Foster was specifically targeted because of her job as crime watch president and because she has been outspoken about cracking down on crime in the area, including drug dealing and vandalism.

This is why I'm now actively looking for houses to get out of this city once and for all. I will be leaving here shortly, finally. I can't stand this city anymore and please, don't believe the lies from the Doherty camp about how well this city is doing and how it's a great place to raise kids, it's not, it's all lies. I have been here for 9 years and I know the truth. It's time to go. People like Chief Duffy and Karin Foster try to help, but to no avail. The mayor wants this city to decline, what does he care? What has he done to make this city better in all of these years, nothing!!!!!And he will continue to do nothing. I guess he likes drugs, gangs and vandalism. Bye bye Scranton!!!!!!

The Scranton Times conveniently left this article out of the paper and off their website...

That's terrible! She was brave enough to stand up for her neighborhood and I give her a lot of credit. I am too much of a wuss to say much in my area and it is precisely because I fear reprisal. If I was single with no kids, I'd probably think differently. But I don't want to have my family hurt.

So, is it lack of police force that is the issue here? Or something else?

This is what happens here when someone steps up and says stuff about bad things that are going on. Doherty has been cutting back police and more and more bad elements are moving into the area. This is why when Chief Duffy stepped up to the plate and did something the union stepped in and said it was a problem. The problem is drugs, gangs, etc.....it's not this woman or the chief, people who are trying to help and make a difference.

To be fair, Chief Duffy is opening the city up to law suits and the like by acting the way he is when he is off duty. He isn't just "happening upon" these crimes. He is actively seeking them out, off duty. There is a difference.

In Wilkes-Barre, we have a TON of city cops. But almost all of them are desk jockeys. I have no idea why. I think they need to bring back the beat cops that walk the streets. It's been shown to be quite an effective crime deterrent.

I'm as out spoken as she is or worse depending on the issue and I have received many threats and have had property vandalized. It comes with the territory and is why my property is completely secured with cameras now.

Lack of police and the "not in my backyard" mentality of the city are at the base of the problems here.

NYrangers its shame, but I understand completely. Electriccityman you just keep your head down in the sand with the rest of the city and those of us that are willing to say something and open our mouths about the city will continue to carry the rest of the NIMBY's like we always have.

Mr Yuk seems to think so and he's is from this area. I know plenty of other people who live in Scranton and like it.

Why is your opinion the only one that is correct?
