I did 11 years ago and now I'm in FL. Don't regret it one bit! Too many people never leave the area to explore other states. Little do they know, they are missing out on so much. If I had to live there again, it would be in the summer only. Family is all still in PA so that would be the weighing factor.

It's not horrible there but the winters, cold and dreary days are just too much, especially if you have SAD. I need my sunshine

What do you mean IF you could move out of pa? Has interstate relocation been outlawed or something? I think you just mean, "if you were to leave Pennsylvania where would you go?" I'm good. I'd considered in the past the possibility of leaving but then I'd just be a quitter. **** that.

Oh and to everyone, what's stopping you from leaving???? If you'd rather be somewhere else, then by all means go! You do know you're going to be dead soon, right?? Why spend your life in one place when your preference is somewhere else entirely?

I don't think moving would be quitting, ElectricCityMan. Could be of course but could also be just time to move on. Some people people stay in one place all their lives, others move. Something said for both.

Me? Thought about Maine for quite a while. Decided to stay in PAbut will be moving a bit west when I retire. (live in Bradford Co now-will move to Tioga Co.)

Yeah definatly not sure about your quitting comment but its all personal opinion. I moved from Long Island to go to college in PA and have stayed ever since. Warmer, more temperate climate would be ideal but we do have it good here as far as extreme weather goes, no tornadoes, earthquakes, horrible storms that do alot of damage...at least where I am , please dont say the earthquake in early fall later summer was anything

As an "outsider" agree with Becky, When you look in from the outside, there are an awful lot of folks who just think that they should not ever leave.

When I have spoken about my son's plan to go away to college, this is strange.

Love the area, but if you are afraid to leave, that is not normal. People leave and come home. It will still be there.

Have SAD too. Another thing that I love about NEPA is that one can own a decent home here and a second home.

This is my plan.

Picking one place is not possible for me. I could list many possibilities. I am where I am today for a reason. Much is by choice. Some thoughts:
  • There are many, many nice places in this country and around the world. Few are 'perfect'. All have pluses and minuses. It takes time to penetrate the external facade to discover these.
  • Moving can be both an adventure and a pain. Some folks spend a lot of time looking, moving, and settling down.
  • Most people need a place somewhere else to 'go away to' occasionally (even in their minds). It can be modest, it just needs to be 'somewhere else'.
  • Some folks have two and three homes or places they regularly frequent. Funding, maintaining, and caring for them can become a burden over time.
  • It is a luxury to have friends in 'fun to visit' places who welcome your company. This is a great way to more deeply experience other places quickly. Quality time with friends and family can also be better than simply 'being in' other places.
  • Some folks don't attribute their quality of life and happiness to where they live.
Not everyone will agree with all of this. People are different...

Not that there is anything wrong with any of this.

Just thinkin'

Two different lists:
If I want to stay local to be closer to family I would choose the Baltimore-Washington area.
If I would move farther away it would be to SoCal, Los Angeles or San Diego region. Great weather, close to the beach, and large enough cities to provide diversity. Only downside is Cost of Living which makes it very difficult for most to afford a good lifestyle on a normal income
