I love the centuries of history in most towns, how I can wander on a little highway to a nestled town 99.9 percent of Americans would have never heard of and spend an hour taking pictures of homes and buildings the likes they'll have never seen in their cookie-cutter sub-divisions. I love the way so many little towns cling to the mountainsides in determination that they'll coexist. To hell with grids, this is NEPA where there's hardly enough room for mountain, house and road to coexist.. I love how the town signs advertise things like, 'Wyalusing: a friendly, progressive community', or (I think Laceyville) advertises itself as 'bucolic'.. I know the meaning as countryside, but the first thing that rushes to my head is plague.. gotta work on that one. Anyway, I like the little colleges and universities all 20-30 minutes from each other, it's a concentration of higher education that is such an untapped resource. I love how the community feels a pull toward cheering on NY sports teams, Philly sports teams and Pittsburgh sports - a little bit for everyone and a natural home to rivalries, quite entertaining most of the year. I love that I can wander for hours on the winding streets of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and vicinity and still feel lost. I love driving past Promised Land State Park or Lord's Valley and not feeling like I'm stuck in the bible belt.. a reminder of the past and convictions without the obligatory thump against the head from said bible. I enjoy the billion and a half bars, pizzerias and Italian restaurants - hardly pretentious, just tasty food. Kayaking on the Delaware or Susquehanna, hiking in a million odd places, albeit with bright colors to avoid the hunters' ire. The churches and towering county and city hall buildings, courthouses and the like.. Downtown Scranton and its university, Olyphant's three blocks of downtown architecture, standing in the center of Wilkes-Barre's Public Square, Main Street Pittston, Honesdale's compact Main Street strip, Towanda, a hundred other towns to be discovered. The old barns, the scenic views.. this part of the country is very beautiful and off-the-radar.
I don't live in the region but spend a lot of time in Upstate NY for work and play, and take the opportunity to explore a few times every season. It really has a lot of potential from this outsider's perspective.

NYjonsontop, you and I love many of the same hings about NEPA! I wanted something beautiful yet a bit sophisticated, less costly with many institutions of higher learning - hold the Fundamentalism please.
And NEPA perfectly filled the bill! Awesome architecture, interesting little towns friendly and welcoming people! What's not to love?
Your post is an eloquent and articulate little sonnet to our region! I hope that you will weigh in more frequently! Ever thought of a county home here?
I too am a former NYer, and the area is different enough to feel like a move, and similar enough that I have no culture shock.
I love the slower pace and the "Retro Vibe" I still have to remind myself that I am not on vacation when I emerge from a store and see the beautiful democratic display of the mountains! The shoreline on LI was reserved only for the wealthy. Not so with our glorious mountains!
I love the culture more than the area itself. It seems we are so unique in the Valley, we have are own dialect word grammar and definitions. I also love the historical appeal and the friendliness of other people to help out each other. AND best of all FOOD-lots of varities, whatever you like...Wanna Polka?
to the mod and postings---is it me or are some of these posts not so subtle negatives???could we try for simple positives minus tongue in cheek comments?we can do it maybe with some effort

I love the culture too BerthaKingston! I love how all of the traditions from the "old country" ies - have been preserved! I love pogash and haluski and the pletora and abundance of eastern European foods.
Here is my challenge - post something about NEPA that you LOVE. Something that makes it special and makes the area a great place to live and to raise a family. Don't worry, I will put in my two cents, but let me here what you have to day! Lets kill off all the negativity with LOVE and PRIDE!
I am going to respectfully request that posts on this thread go with the spirit and letter of the OP. If there is something you DON'T like about this area, please post it somewhere else. This thread is meant to be positive.
i love the fact you can have a house thats mobile ,and 6 cars that arent. lol
Sadly, that's not just in NEPA...you should check out parts of South Mountain. My ex- neighbors (I moved) fit the description to a "T" The husband would even get mad and throw the wife's false teeth under their trailer.
