I just built a home in the Clarks Summit area and am looking for a reputatble driveway installer.

I'd like to go concrete, but it might be out of my budget.

Can anyone recommend someone?

I'm also looking to have a retaining wall built. If you know someone that does solid work on those, you can pass their name along as well.

Thanks for any help.

I have no idea where Clarks Summit is but I live outside of Pittsburgh and I just had a driveway installed last year. I couldn't afford concrete either. I got a quote and ignored it. The eventually followed up and offered a lower price. Then they offered a lower price for cash. I said no. Not my style but others may go for it. So, take your time and make sure to counter about 30% lower. I easily got 15% lower than the initial quote which was 20% lower than a quote I had gotten two years ago.

If you are handy and have a garden tractor with snow plow or vehicle with snow plow you could possibly try a do-it-yourself asphalt driveway.

I did a cold patch driveway many years ago for a commercial property I owned and it held up pretty good. I rented a roller and did some raking and used the plow. You hire a dump truck to haul the cold patch and ask the driver to tailgate the load (he only opens up the tailgate so far as he dumps and he keeps moving). Most drivers are pretty good at just depositing the right depth of material (about three to four inches works pretty good). I am assuming that you have a good base of crushed rock - if not; you would have to get the base and roll it smooth first.

Other than renting the roller and having a plow; I did not find the job overwhelming - plus; I saved a lot of money. The cold patch held up well for many years. The only problem I had was that I needed to sand it good after I put it down - otherwise you could track tar into house. I used a broadcast fertilizer spreader for the sand.

The reason that I used the cold patch is because it does not set quick. The hot asphalt has to be moved and used quick; before it cools.

Anyway; good luck with your driveway. I don’t know anything about the contractors in your area.

1st Impression Landscape and Construction. They lifetime gaurantee their retaining walls. I have used them a few times and have always been very happy with their work. They don't leave a mess when they are done, either...you would never even know they had been there (ie: driveway hosed off, swept up, etc.). Their number is 570-614-3215.
