Yes it is typical in the Scranton area. I grew up in Moosic just south of Scranton and my parents have mine insurance, basically the entire neighborhood is built on a abondoned coal mine.
My parents have been in the same house for almost 40 years and the only problem they ever had was the side porch was sinking a bit. They just had it reinforced and it is fine.

With all due respect though I wouldn't give them a false sense of security, as mine subsidences can happen anywhere around here. Wasn't there just one near East Mountain somewhere? Didn't a huge chunk of Pittston Avenue in South Side get devoured about five years ago due to a subsidence? Mill Street in Pittston was closed for an excruciatingly long period of time due to the subsidences there. A family from our church opened their basement door one day and nearly stepped into an abyss. The mines were great for our area while they lasted, and now they are nothing but an ugly hindrance. I can't believe there are people stupid enough who want those old culm banks to stay because "they're part of our heritage." Let's completely overlook the fact that 95% of the visitors and residents alike in our region think they're eyesores. Our family is taking out mine subsidence insurance soon because in Spring 2008 they're going to start building a new mall on the hill above our subdivision. We're worried the vibrations might make the land somewhat unstable.

As someone who grew up near Peckville (Archbald and Jessup), and voluntarily bought a home and settled in Scranton, I take offense to your comments. Personally, I like the sense of community that is found in my Scranton neghborhood as opposed to where I grew up. I like the smaller, close-knit neighborhood schools in Scranton, as opposed to Valley View, where kids are all bussed 5 miles to a big mega school. Since graduating from Valley View, I swore never to send any of my kids to their lousy schools. And to be honest, my neighborhood is just as nice and well-kept than any neighborhood in Peckville, Jessup, Dickson City, etc....actually the architecture in Scranton is much nicer than in those towns. Does Scranton have a few bad neighborhoods? Sure, but so does every other town in this area. Peckville has crime-ridden public housing projects as well. I have never been robbed, vandalized, or had any sort of crime committed against me, my family, or my property since living in Scranton, I did, however, have my vehicle vandalized and robbed once...in Jermyn....and the Barney Fife police that are all too common in the smaller towns "up da line" couldn't be bothered to try and help...I guess I wasn't enough of a "good ol boy" from their town with the right last name. Scranton has a professional police, as well as fire departments, which make me feel much safer.
I also like not having to drive at least 15 minutes to get to stores, restaurants, etc. I have just about anything I need in Scranton within a walk or a very short drive.
Just thought I would clear up your uneducated post.

If you live there it's OK to mispronounce...the toxic waste just eats at your brain, eventually effecting speech.
