Default We finally closed on our house

We closed on our new house in Scranton after 45 days just like the sellers requested. The closing went smoothly although our two young kids were tough to keep occupied (one was watching her portable DVD player and the other was playing his Nintendo DS). We went to the Wal-Mart in Dickson City. My goodness, that place is huge and has EVERYTHING!!! We went to the Home Depot on Route 6 and got a few things. We are keeping the thermostat temperature at 58 degrees for now. We will probably come back as a family the week of St. Patrick's day to see the celebration and to get our new appliances delivered. My wife picked out a fridge without measuring and it is 4 inches taller than the fridge spot so we either have to return the fridge for a smaller one (my choice) or just remodel the kitchen (my wife's choice and much much more expensive!!). It's nice to be a first time home owner, although not moving in for another 5 months or so.

No, no, NO!!! You were supposed to go to Lowe's to nag me while I worked! Anyhow congratulations on your new home, and let us know if there's anything else we can do to ease your transition.

Good luck on your new home, you couldnt have picked a better city to raise a family. And also it was a good choice to move within city limits. With the exception of dunmore and the abingtons, the other towns around scranton tend to be on the weird side. When I have kids, I would never raise them in places like peckville or dickson city. I guess theres something in the water up the line.

I am just a little curious as to why you looked in every section of the city but North Scranton. I know I am biased but it is extremely safe, very blue collar, and very cheap. And I know that Neil Armstrong is one of the best grade schools in the city.

However you made a great choice to live in the st. anne's area of westside. I would definately live their over southside.

"Plus, the schools are better in West Side. We have our own high school, which is much smaller than the overcrowded Scranton High School, plus Scranton high school's student population comes from a lot of the bad parts of town. West HS is much smaller, which is more conducive to a good education, plus its just West Side kids that go there, so there's much more of a sense of community."

GO Phillies,

Sorry, But I have to respectfully disagree with westside having better schools. Its true that Scranton high does have a lot of the troubled youth in the city. But Scranton Highs top tier of students are second to none. Every year students go on to Ivy League schools, not to mention that every year Scranton scores higher on standardized testing than westside. Students that are lucky enough to get into honors and AP classes would benefit a lot more in going to Scranton High.

But I love the community pride that Westside has. I wish North Scranton had our own high school.

Not meant to offend anybody from westside, I just felt compelled to defend my alma mater.

.

I agree. I grew up "up da line" and couldn't wait to get out. I swore after graduating from Valley View that I would never send my kids there. People may talk about the Abingtons being snooty...well, let me tell you, the VV school district is as snooty as it gets. They look down their noses at everyone. Plus, its a very closed-minded area. When I was in high school, there was a new kid one year who was black, and people looked at him like an alien just landed from Mars. And he, and the couple of other black students were always subjected to racial slurs. And that kind of behavior is passed down from generation to generation. Those kids probably learned it at home. Also, when I was in school up there, kids always made fun of and tormented poor kids who didn't wear the right brand of clothes or shoes.

My son, on the other hand, doesn't look at someone of a different race to be any different than he is, and most of the kids in his school don't seem to care if a kid is wearing K-Mart or the Gap. Racism, while it may exist in Scranton, doesn't seem to be as prevalent as it is "up da line."

I'm much happier in Scranton.

Thats a shame, these kids do get it from the parents, it is a learned behavior, some people generalize everything and are just not socially open minded.I have a home in clarks summit and so far haven't come across these snooty types, nor would I care to associate myself with anyone who thinks they are holier than thou better than the next attitute. What happened to indivivuality among people?
