Do you have any more information about it, that I might ask around about it to some of the older folks on my street?
Thanks,

Hubby was born in Brooklyn, but it was HIS idea to move to Pa and leave the kids (who are now grown and flying the nest) to NY...one in Queens and the other on LI. We'll only be a 3-4 hour drive from NY anyhow and hubby will commute to Brooklyn and home every two weeks (he works on a gas barge in the NY Harbor). Now that I've written my novella, we plan to be closing on a house in Susquehanna County in early December 2007!

The company I used to work for had an office in Williamsport...I never had the opportunity to visit it...but..they said is was a quaint and wonderful town.
At the time, the company I worked for was Parente, Randolph, Orlando, Carey and Assoc.

Hi:
I'm from Westchester County, New York.
I fell in love with the area and retired in Pike County.
Bought the house in 1998 and came up on weekends until 2004 when I moved here permanently.
Finding it very hard to make friends in the area unfortunately.
It seems since I didn't attend high school here in PA, "I don't belong."
I am new to this forum and hope to be able to communicate although it doesn't make up for face to face contact.

Welcome to the forum! I live near Scranton, but if I lived out in Pike County I'd be more than happy to welcome you to my neighborhood; I'm sorry to hear you've gotten the cold shoulder. However, this isn't something unique to transplants. In 1996 our family moved roughly five miles away to a subdivision of around 25 homes (at the time). Only one woman came over to welcome us, and she herself was a fresh transplant from Los Angeles. Just the other day my family helped an elderly neighbor shovel out her sidewalk and driveway after watching her struggle, and she lamented "This neighborhood isn't what it used to be." She's right. Folks here just don't care about anyone but themselves. After our most recent township meeting I tried running after two neighbors to wish them a Merry Christmas, and while I was talking to them they kept on walking briskly away from me towards their SUV, practically cutting me off mid-sentence. I know a lot of folks in my township are quite wealthy, but that doesn't give you an excuse to be insular!
Friendliness doesn't exist in NEPA, I'm sorry to say. People will only let you delve into their lives so far before the invisible barriers fly up and they push you out. I can't even tell you how many times I've driven by and waved to one neighbor in particular who just turns his head away. Why? So much for being the "Valley With a Heart."
Sorry to rant like this, but I just wanted you to see that you're not being given the cold shoulder because you're from NY---it's ALL OF US, even we multi-generational natives.

Folks are from South Side and the Hill, moved out to find work in the 50's. They moved back in the 90's. Relatives all over the city and valley. Roots date back to 1850's Scranton.
Schools in Stroudsburg were getting a little scary, so we decided to move up here. We love the Big City now, and we enjoy Scranton.
