There are a few nice people and houses in PCP that people will take care of but they are not the scary Wal-Mart shoppers. I hated shopping in Mt Pocono because the people from the"hood" in their brand new SUV's and their bodies laden down with gold chains would blast their rap music with all the profanity and park in front of the stores, just daring you to look at them. In general, that was my experience. Glad it's not as bad with the new stores.
Actually the area is growing in leaps and bounds. An Advanced Auto Parts is gong up in front of Walmart. There is also talk about a new Giant grocery store to the right of Walmart. There is a relatively new Rite Aid and CVS. I think there is also a new car auction up there?

Kalahari is planning on a new 300,000 sq. ft. water park/300,000 sq. ft. convention center/ a 1200 room motel and an outdoor water park. That would be on 150 acres that is currently owned by Pocono Manor. Of course we do not know if it will ever get out of the planning stage?

They are busy repaving 940 from 611 to 380. They previously widened the area right in front of Lowe's/Walmart and K-Mart.

I have never had any problems and I have not even used my concealed weapons permit! I have shopped Walmart late at night. But; I don't hang around bars – I don't drink.

Holy cow! Yes, you are so right! The area is growing! I haven't been to Mt Pocono in almost 4 yrs now and I really don't want to even visit there. Now when I go to Pa it is to visit my sis and bro-in-law in Catawissa, right near Knoebels and a beautiful area. Now that is country! They retired there.
I am glad you don't have issues with those slum people from Tobyhanna. Maybe the changes are making them go elsewhere.

If you want to visit the Mt. Pocono area the easy way; try the Google Earth program. You can see many of the new stores on their map – except for the new Advanced Auto Parts store (Google's pictures were taken on 5/19/2012). I don't know if Map Quest has good pictures?

I have never been out to Knoebels. I must be one of the last living locals that never made that trip. I have been close; but not to the amusement park – it is beautiful country.

Honestly, even though the casinos are based on people's disposable income, I can see these places continuing to be profitable even while people are scraping to get by. I think Mohegan or some other place in PA broke their record high last year, but I cannot remember for the life of me which one.

Regardless of being broke, many of those people will still come across funds to throw towards gambling. Sad but true.

Fisheye!!!!!!!! You absolutely MUST visit Knoebels!
As far as casino's go, I knew someone that had a gambling problem and it didn't matter if he ended up living on the street. He would gamble. Mostly at Atlantic City. Also, there are so many seniors that take trips to the casinos. It can be a day trip for many, they save their change for months or a year and then go out and have fun. No loss, as the change jar was just collecting dust anyway. I don't think you will ever see a casino hurting much.

I saw the article in Pocono Record today. Used up another free click. LOL I guess the intersection is still a problem, according to the comments. It was a huge problem when I was there and the new stores were not even started!
I don't need to see Mt Pocono but thanks for the suggestions.

One of these days I will get to Knoebels - but I would not hold my breath.

As far as gambling; I just liked gambling better when gamblers had to travel to Atlantic City.

I used to run sleeper team when I was in trucking. I had one partner that was a compulsive gambler. He did not tell his wife how much he lost and she (which was also a compulsive gambler) did not tell him how much he lost. The last I heard they were loosing their home.

We used to stop for a break at the one truck stop in SC. They installed video poker machines in the truck stop. In the very early hours of the morning we would see kids pulling on their parents sleeves so they could go home. Even though our casinos do not let children into the casinos – they still rob kids of the funds and time with their parents.

I just think that we can do much better as a society than to champion casinos.
