Relocating to the Wilkes Barre area for a new job in Mountain Top. Looking to rent an apartment or house in the immediate area but unsure of what towns are decent and safe. I have heard to stay out of the city of Wilkes Barre for the most part. But what surrounding areas are ok? Ashley? Kingston? Forty Fort?

Also willing to consider anywhere along 476 from Wilkes Barre down to White Haven, just haven't been able to find many listings and am unfamiliar with the areas.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Forty Fort is nice. I haven't been to Ashley in a while but IIRC it is more family oriented. The Back Mountain is safe and you may be able to find a decent rental; this includes Shavertown and Trucksville (which are part of Kingston Twp), Dallas and West Wyoming. Slightly closer to Wilkes-Barre is Luzerne, which isn't bad. You'll just need to shoot through the Cross Valley Expressway and over to 309 up to Mountaintop, which shouldn't take too long; the only worry is going up that mountain but if you live in any of those towns you'll have to do that.

Kingston has its good parts and its bad parts. Unfortunately the scumbag element from Edwardsville is starting to bleed over into Kingston.

Thanks! Do you know anything about White Haven? I know it's a little further from Wilkes Barre but I found a nice place available for rent there and it would be convenient for me location-wise, I just am unfamiliar with the area.

White Haven is okay. The town seems a little rundown and quiet to me but it's safe.

Is it near anything like stores/restuarants etc. or would I pretty much have to go up to Wilkes Barre for most of that stuff?

Never lived there, but I've been to Nanticoke plenty of times, it seemed nice enough.

There's at least one grocery store in town that I know of, but there isn't a developed area with chain restaurants, etc. nearby. There is an awesome restaurant near town, though, called The Powerhouse Eatery.

Powerhouse Eatery

White Haven is closer to Hazleton than Wilkes Barre, it is basically a small village right near the Lehigh Gorge. The actual town area is a little close and stifling for my taste but the general area is beautiful. I take drives out that way to walk the game lands with my dogs but the game lands are a little north of it in Drums, PA. I would live in the backwoods of Drums any day if the price was right and areas of White Haven are similar. You won't find much shopping right in the town though and the outskirts are heavily wooded. You will have to travel either to Hazelton to shop or drive North up 437 to get to Wilkes-Barre. 81 is possible but out of the way, you will have to get on 80 west from White Haven and then catch 81 North and it will add some 10 or 20 miles to your trip. 437 is the fastest way to Wilkes-Barre from there.

I don't really think of White Haven as being close to Wilkes-Barre. I like West Wyoming, Kingston, Forty Fort and Exeter.
West Pittston is nice but it floods.

Kingston is pretty self contained. In fact most of westside is.

Not a huge fan of Whitehaven or Mountain top. The latter is safe but very out of the way.

Dallas is also nice.

Hope this helps.
