It would seem that tsedeski's insider insights into Edwardsville are well rounded, detailed and a matter of setting the record straight/ clarification, not umbrage.......
I think he meant this drug bust:
Bloods' among 34 charged in Edwardsville drug bust: Authorities say 14 gang members involved in Edwardsville drug bust.

That was the one I was referencing, but tsedeski is warming me to the thought that even with such a bloody high crime rate Edwardsville can most certainly turn itself around if the good people who still live in town continue to try to drive out the rifraff and take back their streets.

Thanks Frank, It is people like you that will help break the spread of crime mostly caused by druggies and prostitutes who are druggies. I think Wilkes Barre is on its way to becoming a safer city than Scranton. The glory days of revitilization are coming fast.

Default 1 can only hope

I truly hope you are right. I have seen Scranton come back big time. I have family, and friends who live in Scranton’s Hill section, and it has come a long way, and mainly due to great leadership, a lacking trait in Wilkes-Barre. I know our police force is working as hard as they can, but I don’t think they are given the needed tools to do what is needed.

We have a lot of great folks in Wilkes-Barre, and this city will make its come back of that I am convinced. I am a true believer in the people of our city, just not the leaders.

My son has Wilkes University as his #1 school choice right now. Reading these posts certainly has me thinking that maybe it's not such a good choice. Will the building of the new River walk or whatever they're calling it help or hurt the area? It's directly across from Wilkes University.
How is the area around the college? The movie theatre and the bowling alley - recreational stuff like that? Is it safe for the kids to go to, or is there riff raff hanging around?

Wilkes has a nice campus. Nice tree-lined streets, old victorian buildings which serve as campus buildings, professional offices, and homes. Very nice setting. But don't stray too far from campus....more than a block in any direction from campus is pretty sketchy and there are always riff raff wandering around the area, even in broad daylight hours. I work fairly close to the campus, and we park in a Wilkes-owned parking garage that is also used by students....there have been multiple car break-ins in the garage, despite the lower level of the garage being the office for Wilkes University security. There is a nice new movie theater only a couple of blocks from the camus, but I really wouldn't recommend walking around there after dark. In the other direction from campus, going south toward South Wilkes-Barre, it gets very sketchy. Riff raff everywhere, run down neighborhoods...and the businesses in that direction pretty much consists of dollar stores, check cashing places, pawn shops, and Rent-A-Centers. Should give you an indication of the neighborhood clientele. Crime is high in W-B (at least compared to Scranton and the rest of NEPA, its not like its Newark, NJ or anything).....personally, while I believe that Wilkes is a good school and the campus is nice...the area surrounding campus is not very nice and not very safe.

Having moved from WB many years ago and remembering what it use to be and now reading this thread I am thinking WB really went down hill. I still have family there and they have been victims of robberies over the years but I would not characterize it as major.

What is really driving the crime? Loss of jobs, drugs, education, family unit?

To bad a nice city like WB has gone down so much.

Default Hi Jenn

Let me fist begin with the fact that Wilkes University has on site security, and they are a wonderful asset to the area. I can not speak highly enough about our downtown schools, and students. As far as the area surrounding the schools I live there my mother lives there, and my sister is a student at Wilkes. The city is crime ridden don’t get me wrong but we have a wonderful police department, and folks in the area who truly care about the neighborhood. I have been serving a the coordinator of the South WB crime watch for the past few years, and I am convinced that if we keep working together we can resolve our city crime problems. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. My email address is Frank@MyWilkesBarre.com
