Hi- I was wondering if anybody had some words of wisdom for me and my hubby. We were thinking about moving from central NJto the North Pocono area. Seems like a big culture change though. Has anybody made this type of move that can offer advice on areas, etc ?

Do a search on moving out here and you'll get a ton of reasons of the pro's & con's of moving out here...if you work in NYC and plan to commute that'll become your biggest nightmare...as I've advised countless others here on the board...research research research...fail to do this and you'll be setting yourself up for a major disappointment...I've been coming up here since 1996, lived out here from Jan. '99 - Oct. 2000, and then moved out here again permanently in 2007...

Why do you want to move here? Do you have family here? Do you have a job here? Do you like the outdoor activities? What's your motivation?

Yes, it is a culture change. Many people who come here begin to compare the way things are here to the way they were there. That won't help you to assimilate. Do what Webb says - research research. And check out the other threads about relocating to the Poconos. There are certainly enough of them. Good luck.

Ditto. Been there, done that, never again.

The lack of jobs is far from the only problem (but its a big one). Commuting to NY or NJ is hellish. Lots of other issues. As others have said, read some of the other threads.

No big culture change, since an abundance of NJ (like me) and NYC people are up here now. However, you have to drive farther do get to the store and there will be fewer choices for shopping. Also, if you plan on having a family and commuting, be aware that you or your husband will miss out on a lot of your kids growing up while sitting in traffic.

I am lucky that I live in Shawnee and my commute to Morris County NJ allows me to get leave at 7:30AM and get home at 6:00 or earlier if needed, so I got to watch Little League and youth football, and even help coach once in a while. If you get home at 7:00 and leave the house at 5:00AM you will hate your job and be frustrated when you miss your kids' recitals, school plays, and on and on.

Stay where you are!!! We did it and it's not worth it. Moving back. Were in bethlehem. Husbands been commuting for 5 years to newark. Found out Leigh valley is not know for their friendliness! The big house gets old and hard to clean, but the commuting keeps on going. Son couldn't find work here so he's in Korea teaching. Unless your a dr., or factory worker, no jobs as posted prior. Taxes not that cheap when you add in time, gas and wear and tear on your car. Just my 2 cents.

Health care is awful, schools are awful, climate is cold & gloomy much of the year, so your heating costs will be up, there's little to do unless you want to get into hunting, fishing, skying etc..., and the commute will hurt you & your family. If you will be working here, expect to get paid far less, assuming there is work. I'm moving back, many NJ/NY transplants I know are moving back. Plus, they don't like outsiders here, especially from NJ/NY. The Poconos seem to be better than other areas in that regard, because so any transplants live there, but not enough to make you feel comfortable. They want you to be like them, "assimilate", meaning you are NOT OK as you are. The grass is not greener on this side, its grayer.
Do some research on healthcare, schools, and other important issues. The information is out there, and more accurate. Wish you well whatever you decide, but I wish I would have heeded the warning.

Don't you just hate when someone makes a post requesting advise and never reply to the advise? Or worse yet, don't even bother reading the advise posted.

Wow this was exactly what I've been looking for,I was very interested in buying and moving out to the poconos at the end of this year my coworker is in the process of breaking ground for his home with the co lts I kno you heard of them.I also have lots of other coworkers who live up there and I'm talkin 3&7 years up there and they love it.We r bus drivers for the mta and I also used to b a truck driver so traffic and commuting is not a problem for me and also I'm looking at it like this when I retire I won't be able to afford to live as a senior in NYC cost of living will definitely go up!
