IMO, no one HAS to buy expensive candy or any candy at all. Turn off your porch light as a signal that you are not handing out treats or when you run out. Simple enough.
It would seem that if families live in a "community", it would be easier and more fun to trick or treat among your neighbors instead of driving to a different location. Having lived rurally all my life, I would think that it would be great to be able to walk to 10 or 20 houses. I think we spend more time getting in and out of the car than we do at the actual houses when we go out on Halloween night!

omg how ridiculous that theres scheduled times, yuck. I think trunk or treating is the stupidest idea ive come across since we moved here, takes all the fun out of the whole day. I finally got our devp to organize trick or treating here for the first time this year and am so excited not to have to drive to a regular neighborhood for my kids to enjoy it!

Greentown,
I have friends that live in Milford that tell me they get over 800 trick or treaters. Wouldn't it be a great idea to have a candy drive to help off set the costs. Many of the people are from other areas....which is fine...but aid should be given to the residents of Milford.

I am glad I do not live in a town where the government dictates when children can go out for Halloween.....what's wrong with this picture?

In our town, trick or treat is always on the Sunday preceding Halloween. From what they tell me, this was done years ago after a child was struck by a car trick or treating in the dark on Halloween night. They now do 2 to 4 p.m. to allow it to be done in daylight. After that, the recreation board hosts a small Halloween parade with the fire trucks, and everyone is invited to the fire station to receive a drink, a donut, and yet another bag of candy
Our town also synchronizes with the neighboring towns so vans full of kids are not traveling from place to place. I personally only take my kids to houses where we know the residents personally (which is about half of this small town LOL)

Here in Danville we have Trick or Treat on two nights, which drives me crazy!! T or T should be on Halloween, one night only, and that's that!
As for the time, the town I grew up in always announced times for T or T; the reasoning was many weren't home early, so they started at 6pm. It gave kids time to do homework, and parents to relax a bit before heading out with their ghosts and goblins. The end time was put in effect because older kids were soaping cars, egging houses and that kind of stuff on T or T night and they were trying to curb that.
And yeah, the rule was if the porch light was out you didn't go to that house! (Of course, being young and all, we always were mad at those people for not giving us candy - like we need any more! LOL!)
Now here's a question...how old is too old for your kids to go out for T or T? Just curious...
Cathy

As I said before, no one is forced to buy or give out candy. Turn off your porch lights, as this is the signal that you are not giving out treats.
