Default Do I need snow tires?

Howdy,

Just moved up to Milford, PA from Orlando. Usually it's the other way around...but I digress.

Both the wife and I have high performance all season tires that are M + S (mud & snow) rated.

The wife will be commuting down to Parsippany and I'll be tooling around Milford.

Do we need to equip the cars with dedicated snow tires such as the Blizzak, or Alpins?

I don't know how gnarly the winters are up here are and what kind of road conditions...such as ice.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

We're loving the Poconos so far and our new house.

Kevin "I think someone here suggested Milford..."

Do they allow snow tires in N.J.? I know they don't in N.Y., but don't know how the law treats someone with a PA plate in those circumstances.
AnywaY! Snow Tires...We moved here 14 years ago and someone recommended snow tires. We love them! My husband was a big 4 wheel drive fan until then, but we would prefer snow tires over 4 wheel drive anyday. I wouldn't drive without them.

dont confuse snow tires that arent studded with snow tires that are . unstudded tires can be used in any state. the new generation such as blizzaks are excellent and work almost as well as studded

Hey,

Thanks for the quick replies.

Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't talking about studded snow tires, but the new snow tires that formulated especially for snow and ice.

So you guys switch over for the winter? A spare set of rims and tires?

Kevin "Hello, Tirerack?"

OK, having a 'grey' moment, I meant studded snow tires in this post. Yes, we switch in the winter, and many folks do as I work at a garage. We don't have an extra set of rims, although that would be nice. Just get the mechanic to do it for a nominal charge.

I live in Scranton and have no need to change to snow tires for the winter, even with a daily drive to Wilkes-Barre. All seasons work fine here. There are very few days that you can't navigate the roads with all-season tires. Maybe the Poconos are different, I don't know.

All Season M&S are fine. It more the technique of driving in snow that is important. and understanding the old pumping the breaks rule is out the window with ABS and other stabilization features in todays cars.

Agreed. I live in Pittston and commute daily to either Wilkes-Barre or Scranton with a front-wheel drive vehicle with all-season tires and have minimal difficulty (with the exception of hills of course). The important thing to remember is that even if you have an SUV that you are not invincible; I see far too many SUVs blowing past me and honking on I-81 during blinding snow squalls doing 60 miles per hour while I crawl with my hazard lights flashing doing about 35 miles per hour at best. Too many around here don't drive for the conditions, which is why you see nothing but serious car accidents during every snow storm on the evening news. I'm waiting for one of those "invincible" SUV drivers that blows past me to suddenly lose control in the passing lane and veer into my vehicle. Can anyone say "lawsuit?"

Comparing the Scranton/WB to Milford is like comparing Florida to Ohio. They are two different areas and the weather will be much worse out there then here in the valley. Get the tires. Your wife will be commuting down 206 and 15 to Parsippany and in the winter those roads are no joke. I do not think that you'll be needing the studded tires but they cannot hurt. That area is prone to some nasty mixed weather ice/snow/rain and the conditions change rapidly coming up or down those roads to I80.

I suggest winter tires. Conditions can change rapidly. 15 minutes can mean the matter of snow or rain or ice. There are vast changes in conditions around here so i suggest you get the snow tires. It can't hurt to have snow tires. You can't be too safe.
