Speaking with my granddaughter last night, and was surprised when she told me that one has to call for an appointment to take the state driver's license test. She said you need to call well in advance, and she's concerned because her permit expires in early August. She has logged the requisite number of hours behind the wheel with an instructor, but she had a couple of breaks because of school commitments.

It's been quite a few years <snicker> since I took my test, but my instructor just said "Drive" and we ended up at the SP Barracks, got in line, and I took the test. (I passed).

LSS, I told her to call now and make the appointment for mid-July, which will give her a month to work on her parking (her only weakness).

When did this "appointment" business start? (I'm starting to feel really old!)

They "open" appointments every Monday around noon on their site. She doesn't have to call to make the appointment. She can log on with her permit number and birthdate then schedule online. Here is the link:

The scheduling requirement is probably because there are only a handful of examiners, who also handle clerical duties, for thousands of residents.

Last test I took was by appointment but that was for a CDL. I was one of the last people to go through there, it was state run place near Hazleton.

For regualr drivers license I failed it the first time. Sailed through the whole thing and he tells me to head out to the parking lot to park the car. They had a stop sign right before you went into the lot and I blew right through it becsue I'm excited because I knew I passed.

My son called to schedule the test almost exactly a month ago - his test will be on Wednesday. He is over 18 so we didn't have any of the requirements of hours logged or anything like that.

Oh, good grief! I'm really behind the times! I thought that everybody who was testing for a DL had to have so many hours with a licensed driver by their side! This particular granddaughter is going to be 20 in a couple of months and thus far, hasn't needed to drive. When my boys got tested, things were different, and I haven't kept up since then. Guess I'd best start paying attention, eh?

When I rook my driver test I took the written part one week, came back the next week for the driver exam failed it that day but passed it a day or two later. Since I had already taken drivers ed I was able to send in for a special card that allowed me to drive after midnight. There was no restictions on my driving other than the real law... my parents.

Written test? Written? OMG!! I had no written test. Writing hadn't even been invented yet. j/k
I got behind the wheel; a trooper/tester got in the passenger seat. I drove where he told me to drive, and when we returned to the starting point and parked, he asked me a half dozen questions covered in the manual. Told me I passed, and I was done.

I'm expecting any day that they'll make me re-test. Showing a little leg won't help me this time.

Doesn’t depend on how old the tester is? They could not all retire; could they?

I liked my motorcycle test. The tester told me to do a figure eight in the parking lot and then told me I passed. He never got on the bike. I am curious how they do the motorcycle test today? I took my driver's test an motor cycle test in the 1960's.

Well it wasn't written, If I recall they had these things that looked like one those slide show things you can click to look at pictures on a disc. It was huge though, there was like four buttons for a,b,c or d. It was some kind of 70's or 80's tech...

I think the CDL was written though.

The best part of driving back in the 60's was how cheap it was to buy and operate a car. I bought my first car for $25. It lasted two years, until I got tired of it, and I sold it for $100. I also remember $.35/galleon gas for many years – I also remember cheaper gasoline in the 1950's.

Theatergypsy let us know how your granddaughter makes out. I hope she aces the test on the first try.
