Things are different here...in my hometown our parade has always been the first Saturday AFTER Thanksgiving. It was always a great way to introduce the season!!!! The only thing I compare to LI and do not like here. We are not going to any here, but can not wait to go on the Santa Train on 12/5....shhhhh it is a surprise for our lil man!

Could not attend either since I am currently in the Philippines. But if I was there I would definitely attend the Scranton parade.

My college will be participating in the parade, so I'm tempted to attend the Wilkes-Barre one to cheer them on, but my significant other lives in Pike County, closer to Scranton, so it would be more feasible to pick him up and then head to the Electric City's parade. Anybody have a preference for one parade over the other? Furthermore, does anybody know why both cities INSIST on competing all the time by always having so many events at the same time? I'm sure if these parades were held on different weekends you'd have people from Wilkes-Barre taking their children to the Scranton parade, and vice-versa, hence pumping MORE money into each community.
I know this is an old post, but I just wanted to respond, as this is still archived.

The Greater Scranton Jaycees Santa Parade is not organized or presented by the City of Scranton, so there is not meant to be a "competition" with any other city or parade. While the City of Scranton has offered support as a sponsor of the Parade in the past, they did not do so in 2009.

Many factors go into the selection of a date for the Parade. Among them is the availability of the balloon and helium companies, as well as members of the Greater Scranton Jaycees, an all volunteer organization. Many members are not available during Thanksgiving weekend, so it makes more sense to have it the weekend prior. The Parade could not be presented without the help of members. It is also coordinated with WNEP-TV. It it were held any later, the weather may not be cooperative. If held any earlier, people would complain that the Christmas season were being pushed too soon.

I hope this helps to clear up the issue.

Yes, but I assumed poconogirl (who posted 2 days ago) was asking about the Parade this year. Perhaps a incorrect assumption.
