being from the south, ergo, seriously under-educated, I've mostly heard it pronounced "Wilkes Bare as_y"

I worked with a guy from Wilkes-Barre and he pronounced it WILKES-Berry.

It drives me nuts when people say WOOKS-BERRY.

I tend to say Wilkes-Bear.

There are many different local pronunciations, I believe that is because of ones ethnic background. If your parents or grandparents pronounced it a certain way , you do too. BUT the above post is correct, It is pronounced correctly after the names of the men it was named after....My dad used to pronounce deaf as deef , as did his parents... it was accepted, but it didnt make it correct.

Anyone want to tackle the Tigue St. exit of of 81??? LOL

I've been visiting PA for 25 years. I've always pronounced it Wilkes-Berra......but I'm southern so it really doesn't matter that it drives me crazy to hear it pronounced Wilkes-Berry.

I was born in Tunkhannock and say "Willks Berry," but I've heard it all ways.

As a side note, I've heard a TON of Valley folk refer to Tunkhannock as "tun-kuh-NOCK." What the F? It's "tun-KAN-nick!!!"
