Default Living in Scranton, what to do?

I am a 26 year old student in Scranton. What is there to do here besides go to the bar and get drunk? That scene got old to me so there is nothing I belive to do. I would like to find things to do that don't cots much money. Any ideas?

I'm from NEPA but I live in Fla now. people say the same thing here as well. Nothing to do but get drunk. It is a lack of creativity you need to address. You live in the mountains, that right there offers hours of stuff for free. hiking, photography, camping ect. You can drive to NYC or Philly for a day trip to go to museums or see historic places.

One of my favorite things to do when I lived up there was to find new places to hike. I loved hiking in all types of weather. I would do the state park i would do bald Mtn, devils kitchen ect. there are novice hiking trails all over. Its outdors, exercise and chicks dig it.

I'm a 21-year-old college student from just outside Scranton, and I have never "gone to the bar to get drunk." The common misconception around here is that the only way to enjoy oneself is to consume alcohol until you're throwing up your intestines, but I find that I am never bored living in NEPA. Here are some suggestions:

-The NEPA Philharmonic plays at the Scranton Cultural Center. Why not dress up and treat a friend sometime to some nice classical music?

-Scranton hosts First Fridays, in which you can take a trolley around town to various arts/cultural venues on the first Friday of every month.

-Consider joining Professionals Organized and Working to Enrich the Region (POWER!), which has a chapter in Scranton. This is a great way to network with other young professionals in various fields while giving back to your community at the same time.

-In lieu of POWER, check into Scranton Tomorrow, Greater Scranton Jaycees, Rediscover Scranton, or another organization aimed to promote the Electric City.

-Become active in local politics by writing newspaper editorials, managing a campaign, hosting debate parties, or even running for office yourself.

-Get into some sort of physical activity that will keep you in shape and will bring you enjoyment. With the upcoming winter season, why not give cross-country skiing, snowboarding, downhill skiing, ice fishing, etc. a shot?

-Find your "niche" somewhere in a volunteer-oriented hobby that interests you. For me this is promoting the city's image via various online message boards, including this one. For you that might be becoming a "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" mentor, a volunteer camera operator for Scranton Today, a captain of a local Relay for Life team, etc. With the Holidays rapidly approaching, I'm sure there are plenty of food drives occurring in Scranton.

-Pick up a free monthly copy of Happenings Magazine whenever they become available. They have not only interesting articles, but they also have calendars with activities to do on every date during that month. The same could be said for Electric City, Weekender, etc.

-Go bowling at South Side Bowl.

-Hang out late some night at Krispy Kreme to catch up with old friends over some yummy glazed confections.

-Dabble in photography and seek out photegenic opportunities.

-Get a job working somewhere fun Downtown like Northern Lights Espresso Bar, Center Street Coffeehouse, Edible Arrangements, Starbuck's, Poochie, etc.

-Read the newspaper.

-Do crossword puzzles, jumbles, Sudokus, etc.

-Engage in PC or console gaming. I'm personally a HUGE fan of The Sims 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and SimCity 4.

-Support the Penguins, Yankees, Pioneers, Miners, etc.

There are countless more ideas I could provide to you. Why 99.9% of the youths around here whine "there's nothing to do" is beyond my realm of comprehension.

You're quite welcome. If nothing else, be sure to pick up a copy of Happenings Magazine every month. I can never seem to figure out what places carry them on a consistent basis, but I know that Cold Stone Creamery always has a stack of them when they come out, and usually the nearby visitors' center does too.

NEPA-x-pat will become famous soon enoughNEPA-x-pat will become famous soon enoughNEPA-x-pat will become famous soon enough
As others have said, there are many things to do...
May I add:

*visit a local museum - Everhart, the mine tour @ McDade Park, Dorfilinger Glass museum, Lackawanna Historical, Steamtown NP, Trolly Museum, etc.

*take a walk/jog around Lake Scranton

*if you like cross country skiing, try Tobyhanna State Park or one of the other parks.

*kind of past the time, but as an avid kayaker, the Lackawanna offers a lot of fun whitewater as well a Class A trophy trout fishing river

*how about getting a tobbagan or tube and hit one of the local hills (PSU in Dunmore is one place that was a lot of fun.

*how about skating on one of the many lakes

*enjoy a horse drawn sleigh ride (several places in the Poconos)

And as Paul said (SWB)...get involved in one of the many volunteer organizations...one of my favorites is the Lackawanna River Corridor Association. They have all sorts of opportunities for you to help restore this gem.

Have fun...and in the words of the immortal Manny Gordan (local forrester)

ENJOY! ENJOY!

Wisconsin has a pizza place that hs what you guys call Old Forge style pizza named Rocky Rococo's. My girlfriend took me to a pizza place here and ordered a pizza and it was square and she called it Old Forge pizza and it reminded me of home.

Another thing, why do people here say trays when reffering to pizza? Not to get off topic.
